Oh man, you just need to have one of these tachs!
No, you don't strap it down. You just put the tach under the heli and fire it up!

You can have no blades on and measure from the flybar paddles.

HobbyCity have a couple of tachs. No idea as to how well they work, but I just ordered one of the Turnigy ones and I'll know more in a couple of weeks. At least I'm not out much if it turns out to be bogus.
