I opened the tower and found 4 256MB RAM cards.
Can I put in 4 1G cards???I found some online for $40 each.

According to the motherboard specs, you can put up to 4 gig of ram in that thing. So, yes, 4 one gig sticks.

sorry been busy, and have not read it all, but you need to increase your ram, xp eats up 1 gig fast, id put in at least 2gig min to get better performance even with the new video card. one recomendation i will say is spend the money on a 500 watt PSU cause if you ever upgrade or get a new pc that PSU will come in handy. because with a upgrade your already set, and with a new pc youll have a good backup. one thing dont get generic PSU its the one item you stick with top brands even with the cost. mainly because generic does not condition the power as it flows, but top brands do like coolermaster and others.
as for the monitor not supporting a resoultion while that is true it is also untrue. what happens is you can run any resolution on any monitor your video card supports, but you only get optimal performance at the monitors native resolutoin. 1024x768 is a decent resolution that most even older CRT's run ... mainly cause the default monitor drivers xp puts in can bump on a older monitor to run just fine at that level.
FYI thats a older tower so 4 sticks should run ok but after you add the video card youll lose part of the ram like i said in the other thread. its Video+Ram in that order for a total of 4 gigs. now dont stop at just 3 gig unless the board allows it some require them like this 1, 2, or 4... its weird but some mother boards dont like only 3 filled. also be sure with that older board to get NON-Parity ram. thats very important.
Note: i did not look at that system so im basing the Non-Parity off run of the mill for back then. it could use parity but im 95% sure it does not. Now you will also see some numbers on it, not the speed but latency it is written as 4 numbers divided by a dash IE 5-5-5-15 the last number is the important one if you have a choice between them. IF i lost you ignore that part and just be sure to get the fastest the board allows. IE 133 or whatever.

read the rest, and i dont think he can use DDR2 ram his system being a P4 chip is more then likely SDram. Be sure to check cause DDR and SD are not interchangable, and you can not put them in each others slots, they are made diffrent to prevent plugging the wrong kind into the board.

Cool. Thanks for the info. All 4 slots are filled in RAM but the are 256MB sticks(cards). Can I replace just one or two of them with 1G sticks and leave the rest as they are or do all the sticks HAVE to be the same?
I think for now I'm going to install the video card and check its performance then.
Mind you,I'm not looking for speed, just a marginally better picture.
I'll look into a better power supply later too.

you can replace 2 and leave two, if you get a good deal on say 2 1gig sticks go for that and make sure those two are seated closest to the CPU. so they will be accessed first. as far as speed best to match them to the speed you have, but if you dont its ok, all that will happen is the lowest speed will be used ...
ie you have 133 ram but put in 266 ram the 266 will be turned down by the os to run at 133.. the only thing that matters is that you match the parity. which i still believe is Non-Parity ram.

8 gigs of 1200 ddr2, 9800GTSx2 (sli in a box) 4 core Intel and 4x 250 gig hard drives in RAID 5. This is assured to give you a great picture no matter what you do. And I'll let you have it for maybe a heli trade? ? Mac...this will out run your 500 ;D

OCZ make an awsome RAM. Yes, thats REAPER. I wonder how many heli's I could get for this in trade?
It is graphic heavy with a giga-byte of dedicated Graphics ddr3 on board the 9800x2. Mac....you would be amazed how this will reproduct the sims you have. Not to mention any other sim you've got. It's also loaded with Ultimate 64 bit.
Really this isn't that expensive...just pretty darn stable. When Mac mentioned the AGP card...did it bring back memories.
also a plus is when NVIDIA started the Phys-X on their software downloads. The most current drivers have it already installed.
