The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ..... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels.. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.' says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years.' reports, The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin, but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves.... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight.

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of people dictate our lives and our economy....WHY?

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to. Think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists?

That is amazing and it isn't a joke. Even without these reserves, we are finding more and more oil and gas (especially gas) every year. Some of the oil is in oil shale which is very expensive to extract. Some is the light sweet crude that is less expensive to extract. Unfortunately, in 2008 congress blocked development of a lot of these areas for “environmental reasons”. Everyone was paying attention to Anwar in Alaska but most of the stuff mentioned in this article was restricted in one way or another also. The article is right about the “big oil” giving up on exploration in the states. Relatively unknown companies like Chesapeake Energy and XTO are racking it in now.

On the gas front, the Barnett Shale in central Texas is many times bigger than originally predicted. Now the educated guess is that no one really has any idea how far it extends. Around Searcy, Arkansas there is another huge gas field. They have known about the gas but until recently the technology didn't exist for them to truly understand how big of a field it was. The same is true of a development around Shreveport, LA. It is one of the most active areas in the nation at the moment because of the lower lease prices compared to the Barnett Shale. By the way, they are having earthquakes in the Fort Worth area, and most believe it is from the gas extraction processes. Be interesting to see how that plays out.

When I was growing up in the Permian Basin in New Mexico (yes, I am oilfield trash from youth and proud of it). They predicted the Permian Basin would be exhausted in 10 years. That would have put it at 1990 at the latest. Still going strong. We have technology to find and extract much more efficiently now.

Truth is no one really knows how much we have. There are a couple of strategies. Some say drain the Middle East dry and then let them beg from us. Some say use ours now. Truth is the market dictates it because ours is generally more expensive to produce that the Middle Eastern stuff.

Rumor has it that there is another mind-blowing oil field in Alaska, too.

Although I'm sure these are great finds, I thought we were working hard to get away from carbon based fuels.

lets not forget about anwar in Alaska lot of oil there also if you drill for oil there we will destroy the tree's even tho there hasnt been a tree there since before the last ice age

The big oil companies like their roll as, primarily, oil refiners and distributors. Low risk and guaranteed profit margins. They don't WANT to explore or drill; that costs money. They love the high cost of oil because they make more money the higher the barrel is. The oil boys were partying in the boardrooms last year when the barrel reached record levels right along with their profits.

If we could reform the oil industry and the banks we'd be a lot closer to recovering the economy and keeping it strong. Unfortunately these industries have a stranglehold on the people and it's our elected representatives that have too much to lose to break that grip.
