A few "surprise" crashes this year that came about from mechanical issues (one in a parking lot, fortunately inbetween the cars, when a wing folded, another, when the ESC went south, not too far away from a maintenance guy checking the soccer field sprinklers. Man, he jumped about ten feet up from a kneeling position when the plane went in) got me thinking about how many guys have liability insurance and whether they're covered if one of their planes or helis hit a car or, heaven forbid, a person.
Check with your insurance agents. Some home owner's and renter's policies cover these things and some don't. Also, if you join AMA there's liability coverage there too.
Happy landings

That's an excellent point. I have thought about joining the AMA park flyings for that very reason. I watched a dad bring his little toddler as close as he could to get under where I was flying. I brought it back in and started flying another direction. Even though were I go is isolated most of the time, it is close enough to get the curious.
I was flying near an unused baseball field when a local softball team's players started doing some batting practice. I would hear them talking about seeing who could hit the heli first. Azzholes. (to be fair, sounds like something I would have tried in the day). I was well out, so no real chance, but I wondered if my liability insurance would have covered me chasing them around with that 450 buzzing their hats ;D

Buzzing them would have served them right although I'm sure your insurer would have frowned on it. ;D Sometimes people show up out of nowhere; at least it seems like it when you're concentrating on flying. I had a guy come up from behind me and and startled me with a question and I nearly planted the heli. I almost planted him too. Happy landings

19K: The liability insurance is the primary reason I joined the AMA, just in case.
I have only flown in a public park one time and it was enough. There is a park 2 blocks from my house that has 4 baseball fields. It was early on a Sunday morning so I thought there would be no one around. I had been flying around for a while and came back to me to hover out the rest of the pack when a boy around 8 or 9 years old came darting from behind me towards the heli. I shot it up just in time for it not to hit him. Scared the stuffing out of me, he thought "thats awesome". I had 3 more packs but after that I packed my stuff and went home.
There is an open area beside where I work that is big enough to fly in and there is a very large (probably 50+ acres) field behind the church that my family goes to. Both of these places are within 2 miles of my house. These two places and my own yard are the only places I fly anymore.

Yeah, well, "kids today", I can remember my grandparents saying that if we didn't ask permission to leave the dinner table, and, obviously, things aren't getting any better. Each generation seems less responsible for their children's behavior or accountability and where will it all end? Likely I'll be dead before it gets much worse. Lucky me. ;D

I went with the full membership BT. I fly planes too (planks for Ern) and the full membership is less restrictive as to size and weight than the Park flyer membership.

I think my generation was one of the last to have corporal punishment in school. I knew that if I screwed up bad enough to get my butt whipped at school that I was getting another one when I got home. Now, I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that I never did anything to get in trouble but the whole "double jeopardy" thing was a pretty good deterrent for me.
As for disrespecting an adult, that would surely bring a good pop in the mouth on top of a good whipping.

Child rearing needs to return to a community effort with parents in charge, responsible and accountable . Like Tony, my teachers were on misbehavior like flies on honey. We knew from a glance that we were out of line and there was a paddle coming your way if things didn't turn around instantly. And, it wasn't only the teachers; the neighbors kept an eye on us too and you could be sure they'd rat you out to your parents if you stepped out of line. And, the grandparents weren't just candy toting "my grandchild can do no wrong" they were more like surrogate parents maintaining the rules of the house if mom and dad weren't around. Somewhere along the the way the Dr. Spock reading parental generation made all of the discipline disappear at school and at home and told the grandparents and neighbors to mind their own business. The majority of parents have abandoned all child rearing responsibility. Our kids are being raised by the internet, ipod, tv and the street . How could that possibly go wrong. Happy landings

i'm going to have to agree w/all the above. i have two daughters, although my wife and i don't spank them, we do put the fear of god into them. they definitely respect themselves and others.
