If only I had 2 more feet of altitude Damage was very slight. Probably one of the softest crashes yet. It hit almost fully upright and did not even touch the blades onto the ground. I was comming out of a botched tight low altitude Avalanche (what I call a Loop with a piro at the top). Then it hit the grass. Spindle, mainshaft, one skid. I'll be suprised if I get past $10. The battery ejected so I think I'll fly that battery only when I'm not around people for a while after I do some charge/discharge cycles on it. Strain relief wire tie on the esc end seems like it held ok. Attachments:

Looked like it was going to be much worse 1/4 a second before it hit. I pray to the heli gods before each flight. Sometimes they are looking out for me. Not 15 minutes before I flew a Plank flyer w/ a 50cc plane deadsticked into the weeds and the whole nose popped off the fuselage. Seeing my dinky 450 did not make him feel any better This Saturday, we have a funfly at our field. I plan to get as low as I can to the grass inverted and have my buddy take a picture (well, lots of pictures). No matter how low I get, I plan to finish the flight planting it inverted. Or maybe I'll try a balloon pop or somthing. Maybe the carnage will be more the next time. I'll throw cheap fiberglass blades on it for that though. Should be some good pics and video for that.

Fixed tonight 1 skid (1/2 a set) Boom mainshaft spindle. canopy supports
I think that's less than $10
Hmm, inverted landing? We have a wood platform or some metal doors we use as tables. Maybe at a seperate occation I can try that. Hmm wonder if I should take the head button off for that to make it flatter?
About 20 years ago a guy named Mike Mas put a peg on the top of his mainshaft and landed inverted onto a table with peg holes. He was advertising the Hirobo Shuttle Zx.

I remember Mike Mas. I don't remember that stunt though. Sounds cool. There are a few youtube vids with guys landing inverted. Some of those, the most successful ones, are on hard surfaces like concrete. I think taking the button off has it's pros and cons. Happy landings

I forgot to flip the idle up switch this morning and it landed in the weeds. I think my only damage is mainshaft and spindle.

Blasted all to heck! Something is up w/ my DX7 and I just ordered a replacement. I've had 4 incidents that I KNOW are Rx/Tx related in the past month. Today, I lost all control of the helicopter in flight. All 4 incidents were with different Rx's but the same Tx. This time I was in a flip about 10' up over the grass and it kept rolling. No indication of any sort of servo failure and I did a range check and it was responding afterwards. I'm gonna take an AR7000 from a crashed plank (Lost radio link but I think this might have been the Rx battery?) and hook up a data logger to it for a number of flights w/ a small electric plane. Then I'll use it on a 450 and fly it for a while. I am not gonna fly the 500 or 550 for at least 20 flights till I know I'm good. This sucks. Broke: spindle, mainshaft, boom, blades, flybar. The Rx must have just started to respond cause I hit the TH once I knew it was a gonner and the maingear is fine. Attachments:

That's a bummer. Haven't heard of any real problems with the DX7, but it's hard to blame anything other from what you say. You hear of "brown outs" and all kinds of stuff related to Tx's but not much on the DX7. Have you ruled out static?
I hope you got Horizon to exchange for free.
Happy landings

At least you seem to manage to find a bit of 'cushion' when you land in those high weeds, thats got to help minimize the damage big time.
One of my worst fears in RC, loosing signal and therefore control. I had this happen on a 1/8 scale on road car once, it just about took someone's ankle off when it got away and crashed into a c/l fence. Now I use a spring on the carburetor slide that pulls it closed when no signal.
