I have no problem with simple, easy mods like adding ailerons or going to brushless. The thing is, you will still have a trainer type plane when you are done. Too much motor or too much control throw can and will overcome the airframe. Points well taken, Mimir. Very good points. It is exactly the vein of thinking that kept me from moding the bee. I did get the SC yesterday. I bought it as a fixerupper and need to figure out why I don't have any throttle signal from the ESC to the motor. I tried a new ESC with no luck. The motor is fine. The place I bought it is sending me another TX to try on it, no charge. I should have it figured out soon enough.

Here's the link to the Dynam Super Cub I bought: www.nitroplanes.com/dysuj3cubpa4.htmlI gotta be honest, it's not really crash proof. It can handle a little, but in my first rough landing in grass I lost a few of the struts on the wings and had a hard time finding replacements. I ended up rigging some on there with CA glue. On the flipside, for $100 its RTF and I still have it and it still flies great. I hand launch the sucker in my apartment complex back yard and fly over the top of the complex. It's got a ton of glide power so I'm able to kill the throttle and glide in smooth. Just food for thought.

I have no problem with simple, easy mods like adding ailerons or going to brushless. The thing is, you will still have a trainer type plane when you are done. Too much motor or too much control throw can and will overcome the airframe. The Hobyzone SC has a very strong airframe, but if you're going to do serious aerobatics the wing should be reinforced with, at the very least, packing tape, or preferably, fiberglass or CF spars through the dihedral breaks. Both stabs and control surfaces are good to go as stock, but adding a piece of tape or two isn't a bad idea. It would be very difficult to turn this plane into a real 3D plane, primarily because of the airfoil, and I don't know why anyone would really want too, but not that difficult to make it an agile sport flyer. Far from the performance of a mere trainer. In addition to adding ailerons and more power the wing dihedral can be reduced, or removed, and the wing span can be shortened and clipped at the tips. They not only do this on SC models but also on the real SC's and similar types. If you've never seen them in action they're pretty amazing. In the end it gets down to what a person wants to do with an air-fame within its limits. Currently, I've taken my old SC and am converting it into an approximation of a Model 17 Beechcraft "Staggerwing". That's about as far as I can conceive of getting extra mileage out of the old girl. ;D Happy landings

Well, I have an RX on the way for this SC, so I am committed to go brushless sooner or later. Mainly because this unit has (and I knew it when I bought it) electronics issues so the stock stuff may not work anyway.
Now, to get the motor. Any cheap suggestions? I found several at HobbyCity that look acceptable. I'll post a link when I get home this evening and get your opinions. In the meantime, if anyone already knows of one, suggest away.

Depends on how much power you want. Look under 480 brushless at HC. The Turnigy motors are dirt cheap and 9 out of 10 seem to be flawless from all reports. The 35-30 is a good choice, IMO, since it's close to stock. The Exceed Monster Power 10 has quite a bit more power than you'll need in the beginning, but it's really cheap at $17 at hobbypartz. OOPS out of stock. Your'e probably going to need a custom firewall arrangement and motor mount. I don't have the details for that mod since I used a spare PKZ 480 (not cheap) in mine and made the firewall adapter out of ply and used a motor mount from the PKZ Corsair. I don't think the 35-30 mods would be too difficult. There are a number of motor mounts for Turnigy motors out there or you can make your own. If the stock motor's OK all you'll need to do is get a brushed speed control for it to plug into your spektrum. Those are fairly cheap. I used a spare ESC from my G2 until I upgraded to the brushless system. That and the 11.1 battery made the plane fly pretty darn good. Happy landings

Hope you have fun with it BT! All this talk of planes has me thinking it it might be time to fix up one of mine. Only problem is they are nitro... Wonder what it would take to convert to electric ...hmmm

Wonder what it would take to convert to electric ...hmmm Should be fairly easy mim. Out with the engine, add new motor and mount, out with the fuel tank and in with the battery. Most of the new planes are set up for both nitro and elec. Once you convert one to electric you won't be able to resist doing them all. Know a guy that did 13 of the conversions and never regretted it. Happy landings

Well to be honest I would need to also get a wing kit for it. The reason I quit flying before was that I was at the field one day with my daughter (who was 5 or 6 at the time). She decided to play inside the base of the windsock tower. I didn't see that she was in there because I was flying. A gust of wind blew the plane over so that I clipped the tower with the wing, which of course destroyed the wing. What really shook me up was seeing her in the bottom. The tower was metal and I clipped it way up at the top, so nothing really happened to her, but the fact that I came that close to clipping HER because I wasn't aware of where she was scared the living crap out of me.

Man that is a scary story. It's sure hard to do anything but concentrate on the plane when it's in the air. Keeping track of a 5 yr. old is a full time job in itself. And it's those unexpected, impossible to predict accidents, that seem to happen at the wrong time and place. Glad it turned out OK for you. I've dodged a few of those bullets myself. The last one being a wing that folded up over a parking area I was barely skirting. In like a 100mph lawn dart. Bore a hole in the asphalt. Just missed a car and it could have hit anybody unlucky enough to be there at that moment. I don't skirt that parking area anymore. Well then, it's a new wing then and a few parts and you'll be back in the air again? Hope so. Happy landings

Happy landings I was looking at the 35-30 you mentioned and also the 35-36 www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3886Quite a bit more motor, but closer to the Monster 10. I have a couple of mount options I have seen. A couple of hand made and this one: www.customrcparts.com/motorMountDetail.php?productID=100010&&bannerID=2Just thinking out loud right now
