Boy...sounds like you guys need to come down here and experience some real southern hospitality. I joined a club a few months ago I gotta say I love it. The guys at this club are a really great group of guys that could not possibly care less what you fly as long as you fly. These are some hardcore addicts, a few of them will go to the field on Friday and don't leave until Sunday night...no joke.
Heli, Plank, Glow, electric doesn't matter, they're all welcome. They have a really nice facility too. A HUGE gas grill, heat and A/C in the clubhouse, full kitchen in the clubhouse, full bathroom (including shower).
So, if you ever find yourself in southeastern NC, come on by the Mt. Elim RC Club. I doubt you'll find I nicer group of people anywhere.
BTW, yes, I am a member of the AMA...
P.S.: just don't come this weekend ;D...we'll all be at a fun fly at another local club (Piedmont Aeromodelers). You're welcome to come by there too though.

That's really cool. I did for years in Jacksonville, NC. Out west now though. I wish more clubs were like that. There is one club here that tolerates helis as long as they fly in their sandbox. So most of us just use the coconut telegraph and end up at an empty lot some where.
That's one good thing about going to the LHS. You meet some fun guys. I still fly at the lot across the ditch. Hopefully no homebuilders decide to develop it.
As far as the AMA goes...I just don't feel like paying for nothing. I don't need the planker fields.

I fly on my own private property, alone. I have several hay and corn fields that I can chose from that are all in walking distance. So AMA wouldnt really be much help to me.

I was an AMA member for years when I flew planks years ago. Mostly because the clubs I belonged to required it. Because I fly (or attempt to anyway in my yard, I have not worried about it now that I have started back with the heli's.

If that is where you met up with your mentor and got the extra training, I'd say it was worth every penny, Dube. Seems like that alone took you to another level in the hobby.

That's probably the biggest benefit to having a membership. You find guys that can really help you along. And it's fun to be with people that share your interest and enthusiasm for the hobby.

And it's fun to be with people that share your interest and enthusiasm for the hobby. At this point, for me, it is almost as much about that as it is the flying.
