Cheap builds are possible. This is an EXI 450 plastic edition that I won a few weeks ago in a photo contest on Xheli's Facebook page. I entered my pimped EXI 500 and came in 7th place (didn't expect to win anything). Anyway, it consists of the following components:
EXI 450 plastic edition ($27) Towerpro MG90S cyclic servos ($6 each) Alpha 400 motor ($15) Volcano 30a esc ($14) EXI D213F tail servo ($7) Esky HH gyro (found for $10 on ebay)
So as you see, for $91 you can build an entry-level helicopter that is fairly decent. In fairness, I already had the gyro and a Spektrum AR6100e receiver but I wanted to build a beater heli for a low price. I gotta tell ya....it doesn't fly all that bad! Here is the maiden from earlier today. I am doing absolutely nothing more to it. I will be using it as a trainer.

Thanks for the tips, sirs. Everything's sorta on hold at the moment, it's the most _#$(!*@&$_ time of the year. Oh yeah, it's called everyone sorta lines up with their hands out, and I don't mean bell ringers, either. Maybe tax time. Still got to get better servos and another receiver. I ain't counting on Santa, he and me went round and round years ago when he started delivering 1040's....
