It looks like the elevator trim tabs broke off of the plane. That would sure do it! Attachments:

I'm sorry, but I think the media coverage and reaction to these events may be a little out of proprtion to what really has happened. But, what's new? The media is reporting that 10 are dead and more than 70 injured. How is that out of proportion? It's a tragedy plain and simple and one that may have been avoided. Steps need to be taken to make it safer. People do not have to die so some rich jokers can go out and play with their toys. This is recreation and no death is acceptable. Not a single one. But given this events record, the chances of a fatality are getting close to 50/50. Not everyone killed was their of their own accord. There were small children involved who had no choice or any way of making an educated choice to risk their lives. It's borderline irresponsible and there's nothing out of proportion about that. Lots of things could prevent it. Ramped barriers in front of spectators for example. From 1200 feet away(which is as close as they get)you would see everything above the barrier but if a plane came barreling at you,the barrier would deflect the aircraft safely over your head. Lots of things to consider. I don't believe any death is acceptable for a recreational event. I am speaking to spectators. If a pilot wants to risk life and limb, that's fine...As well as adult spectators. But let's not drag our children out to play in traffic.

Very well said Ernie.
I agree, that certain fixes and safety considerations need to be instituted. That is obvious. And, sadly, it usually takes a major tragedy to bring about those kind of changes. That is not my point.
The Reno media coverage is consciously pandering, as they always do, wherein lies part of my objection, to the shock, sorrow and moral outrage that the reporting generates. The more spectacular the event the better to feed those reactions and sell more products for the sponsors. It's not about the people maimed or dying, for the media, it's about the horrific way they were injured or died. That is not responsible reporting.
IMO, there are many more serious, avoidable, individual and group tragedies going on that don't receive much media coverage because the don't revolve around a spectacular event. That's my point.

In the news today they said the pilot was in fact unconscious and at full throttle. When the tab broke he pulled up hard as they do when opt out of the race. The G force was to great and he did not stand a chance.
