I finally (after 7 months) broke one of the skids on one of my Bee's Super Landing Gear. The skids did last fairly well considering the abuse I've put them through. Not to mention the abuse I took for even mentioning them. ;D I had read of some alternatives for LG and battery trays for the HBFP, so I thought I would try them out. The tray and the skids are off a HBK2 and fit surprisingly well.

The tray allows for much easier battery placement. I got really tired of trying to balance the LiPo on those two pieces of CF rod. This is the setup with a 15C 1000mAh LiPo strapped in. I had to trim the back mounts for the main gear to clear. Pardon the hack job, but I only had a rough file at home at the time.

I also purchased a Super Battery tray from SuperSkids as I needed a bit more length for the LiPo to sit properly. Amazingly the SuperSkids tray clipped right into the HBK2 base. A slight trimming at the rear for the two mounting holes to line up. The SuperSkids tray has a non-skid coating and all that is needed to hold the LiPo in place is a rubber band. The other thing I like about the HBK2 skids (besides them being very pliable) is the ability to add a couple of screws so the skids don't turn in the holders. I always had to straighten them up after each flight on the previous set. Total weight on the Bee is about 10 grams heavier than it was with the Super Landing Gear, but could have been lighter without the SuperSkids tray.

Thanks fellas. The bonus to using these parts is the cost. About $4 for the HBK2 tray and $5 for the skids. The SuperSkids extension really isn't necessary as anything can be used.
So for less than $10 you can balance the HB easily as well as get a decent set of skids. A fraction of what aftermarket skids cost for the Bees and much easier to install.
Haven't test flown it yet (no time for us workin' stiffs), but will post up a review of the flight characteristics soon.

Nice alternative mod. Get a video going. Would love to see how she handles flying, climbing, diving, spinning, etc.

Sol, that's the kind of mod that gets my blood pumping! That's a huge amount of room in there!
Awesome job! Kent

Sol, That is a great Mod. Wish I could have done that before I put the extra money into the Superskids. I like the SuperSkids, but I could use the battery room.
Thanks for the info!

Hey Sol after looking at the pictures and I dont have one but I thought I would ask what if you mounted the battery where the receiver is then mount the receiver down below where the battery is would it give your canopy more room inside?? The RX does not weigh much...Ray

Yep, the real bonus is the ease in battery attachment and balancing. I really hated to take the battery in and out of the previous setup. I usually cheated and charged the battery in the heli.

The RX does not weigh much...Ray Not sure the Rx mount is strong enough for a battery attachment, Ray. It's just a thin plastic finger that would likely break off in the first crash. There's plenty of room in the canopy and if it ever became a problem the HBK2 canopy is slightly larger, plus it has actual vents, where on the standard HBFP canopy the vents are fake. I've actually cut out the fake vents in the one above and hot glued in some screening material for extra cooling. Also, battery balancing is so much easier when mounted on the bottom.
