Been reading all the posts on ESC failures recently and thinking "Boy, I sure am glad that hasn't happened to me". Well, the RC gods must have been listening because I had a big one, but not in one of my helis...In my Parkzone Corsair. Thought I had a bad cell in the pack, the motor was surging, so changed the pack, back into the air the next day and then the darn ESC quit/burnt on me taking out all power to the motor and Rx (no chance for a recovery) . Nose in hard. Big lipo fire too. Never had one of those before. Nasty smelling smokey fire. Yuk. Now we'll see if Horizon stands behind their product. Either way you'll be hearing about it. esc problems are on the rise - it went out - it caught on fire - i may be way out in left field on my guess - lets say the orignal batt was a 20c so we stick a 30c in there for more power - should we go to a bigger esc ? - would that be a good idea to go bigger amp ;D = VIC

budget the battery amps are like a well. The ESC is the pipe. The well can be as big as you want, no problem, it's the pipe that carries the the amps and the pipe is restricted to a certain number of amps. If the motor demands more amps than the pipe can deliver there can be problems...In most cases it's a defective pipe that is the culprit or a defective or mismatched motor that wants more than the pipe can deliver. In my little story I think the pipe had a crack in it and all the smoke leaked out. That's also known as "magic smoke". Happy landings

the quicker you throttle up the more amps it will pull and the hotter the esc will get - get a bigger pipe ;D = VIC

No need to throttle up quick. I just lock my throttle at 95% when flying. I admit I may draw an amp or two extra going from 5* pos to -8* to -10* but my ESC is showing no signs of strain.
I am however going to upgrade from 60amp to 90amp as soon as the money is extra.

Better to be safe than sorry. I have also found that the plastic shrink wrap restricts the air flow. I usually carefully cut the plastic shrink wrap on the sides so that the heat sinks can cool off better.

Sol, it didn't have a brand on it it was a Parkzone 30A which was made by who knows who. I found out later that they had had some problems with their 25A, ala the Belt CP problem, with burning or failing ESC's.
Also found out that the lipo was punctured by a very inconveniently located sharp pointed screw that punctured the lipo on impact.
Horizon asked me to return the plane; which I did today. I'll just have to wait and see what they do.
Nice crack about the pipe analogy. ;D
