For all you computer savy individuals like Coffin and Ferge, or for others with opinions, I have a quesion. I am about to have to renew my security utilities. Currently I am using Norton 360 2.0. Any recommendations or opinions about the best replacement?

well i'm in the same bout you are BT, mine's about to expire to. but this is my opinion, i don't like norton, or macaffe. personally i think they blow. i've been using AVG 8.5, i really love it. it's proven to be one of the best out there, and also bit defender is towards the top of the list also, allthough i've never used it i hear REALLY good things about it. but so you know when i renew, i'm still going w/AVG. i'm curious to see what coffin uses but here's AVG hompage, to see what you think of it www.avg.com/

The thing I hate about Norton is it seems to bog the machine. Not as bad on 360 as previous. A lot of times I will go a year on one, switch for next-to-nothing on a competative upgrade rebate and switch again the next year. I have had Norton, McAfee and Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm was about 3 years ago and it interupted me constantly. McAfee just didn't seem to protect as well, but I didn't have any real issues with it.
I'll look at AVG . Thanks Fergie & Phil (that kind of sounds like a couple of morning DJ's: The Fergie & Phil Show ;D)

AVG has a gamer mode to which benifits me. maybe not some of you but.....

The newest Norton stuff seems to bloat and bogg pcs. i have a older enterprise edition i still use and i like it. but if you have nothing extreamly important to lose on your pc going free is the best way and AVG is the best free one out there. as far as other security things what most people do not relise is this.
Keep up on all MS Security patches if you get them most often you wont be hit by anything other then viruses from you surfing of the net and checking out questionalbe items.
as far as protectoin goes if you want a firewall first thing is ditch MS and get Zone alarm, its a pain to setup cause it blocks everything but as you get it set it is probably one of if not the best one out there and its free. for adware ,go with adware se, and (brain fart) i forget the other one, but keep them on the side, dont leave them active no need for it, just remember to fire them up and run them now and then and youll be ok.
hey got a questoin about super anti spyware, never heard of it who makes that one, and spybot was the other i was trining to remember.
but remember no matter what you do as time goes on Windows bogs down not cause of any virus or crap, but because their registrey system sucks balls and as you add and remove and just plain use the PC at some point you will need a reinstall cause of all the registry corruption. Most often its that corruption that causes the computers to act up and react sluggish, but those who dont know how to reinstall are kinda stuck.
if you want to setup a good pc from scratch i can offer some advice that will not only save you time on a reinstall but can help dramatically if you ever get a bad virus. if your interested let me know and ill do a short write up for everyone in a new thread.
