Well,,,,it was coming,,,just a matter of time. I've been flying it about 6 flights a day for over 3 weeks. Been doing some pretty good 3D and I was just getting a handle on the inverted hover. Last night I was flying some fast stall turns,,,,doing triple piros at both ends and screaming past me at about 10 feet off the ground,,,,sweet. Here's my mistake; it was late,,,,at dusk,,,and I just had to get 'one-more-flight' to make an even 10 flights for the day,,,it was a perfect day to fly. I guess I got dissorientated coming off one stall turn, I thought the heli was banking left when it was banking right,,,,I corrected to the right while 10 feet off the ground and really moving fast. It plowed into the ground. Looks like everything outside the frame is toast,,,,the head is totalled as is the boom. I'm assuming the servos are trashed too. These Futuba servo are weak,,,last week I forgot to set my timer and I drained the battery while coming in for a landing,,,the heli dropped maybe 3 feet but with the headspeed it was just a little hard landing. Nothing was wrong with the heli,,,at all,,,,except ALL THREE cyclic servos stripped. Well,,,I think I have everything I need to fix it,,,,,so,,,,,maybe 4 or 5 hours of work and it will fly again.

Nope,,,,didn't have everything I need. The frame bottom tray busted on both sides at the motor opening. Had to order a new bottom plate. I have everything else. Supprisingly,,,the cyclic servos are all good,,,,but the tail servo stripped all 5 gears in it. When I opened up the servo case, you could not tell what gear was what,,,,looked like a meat-grinder went thru it. Main gear was toast, but the auto gear and the forward torque-tube gears were fine. The tail shaft and gears stripped. The boom support rods shattered. Of course the boom and torque tube broke.
The main head housing broke right at the Jesus bolt and the feathering shaft bent. The blade grips, flybar cage, mixing arms, swash are all good. The main shaft was bearly bent.
I have everything fixed but the bottom plate, I rush ordered it so I'll be in the air by weekend.
Oh,,,,that Fusuno canopy has a couple chips but no cracks and still looks great,,,,,,,and that took a HARD hit. The heli actually hit nose first,,,the dirt was packed into the front of the frame,,,I think when it flipped,,,the secondary crash took out the boom,,,,and I'm certain that the one Radix blade that was trashed hit the boom.
It was a very ugly crash,,,it sounded just like Kyle Bush going head first into the wall. I won't be flying at dusk anymore,,,my eyes just aren't that good anymore!

Arrrrg,,,,went from bad to worse,,,I'm going backwards here. Both set screws in flybar cage broke when I was about to pull the flybar. I mean,,,I just breathed on them and they broke. I lock-tite'd them in,,,,should have listened to Ernie. They are so damned brittle. I tried to use and easy-out but they just crumbled. Tried to drill them out but they are made of Kryponite,,,brittle,,,but impossible to drill. Now I have to cut the flybar rod between the flybar cage and the seesaw on both sides. And order a flybar cage. I've had to make 3 different orders today because I keep running into more problems.
Right across the street they are running a car smasher for the junk yard,,,,,I wonder how small they can squish a 500?

Sounds like a pretty spectacular crash! But you are not wasting anytime getting it back in the air. ;D LOL at the Kyle Busch reference, I think if he comes in 2nd place in another Nationwide race he gonna go off the deep end -

That sucks, Elk. But your ratio of good flights to bad is pretty impressive. Hope you have the bird back together soon. BTW, that blade strick was impressive. Right through the boom. I am assuming the blade did that

I am assuming the blade did that BT,,,,,can I have my CP II back? LOL,,,the CP II would have saved this, no doubt! And I can only imagine how many crashes the Helicommand has saved me. But,,that's exactly why I sold the CP II,,,,I want to be a 'real' pilot. Not saying that those that fly with the CP II or HC are not real pilots,,but using them IS cheating a little. And they don't allow you to fly full 3D,,,,for one,,,you can't fly stall turns with them. And other tricks look really jerky as you 'fight' the stabilisation system. I'll keep the HC on my 600,,,,it is a lot of fun and worry free. I got the 500 to train to fly full 3D,,,I fully expected to have crashed it long before now,,,,I'm doing quite well with it,,,stall turns,,,flips and rolls,,,,I got a full 2 minute inverted hover at 6 feet the day I crashed it! I just hope it flies as well after the rebuild,,,,,it was a perfect flying machine so far!

Sorry to hear about the crash Randy. Sounds like you'll have it back up and running in no time though. Just sucks waiting around for parts. You still have the 600 up and flying though right? So you're not totally grounded. Hell, remember how long the weather was keeping you down when you first started? Now you're out flying every day.
No kidding about the HC and CP not letting you do the stuff you want to do, especially the stall turns. When I was reading that I was thinking about putting the CPII on the HK500, but changed my mind right after. Wonder if I should sell that CPII. I put it on the BlueRay and flew just a few times. I've got an issue on it where the tail is locked up and just haven't tried to work on it in a while. I'll get it working before too long, but I'm not sure how much I really need that CP anymore, kinda starts to hold you back at some point. Yet again, it can save some $$. Oh, the decisions.

RC,,,,I totally agree,,,,I just sold my CP II,,,,I pretty much out-grew it. I'm flying the 500 clean and loving it. And yes,,,I'm still flying the 600 with the HC. It's just too much fun and worry-free.
In fact,,,since my cousin finally hayed the goose field, I built an airstrip for my jets. The last month I've been flying my two helis and 3 jets several times each everyday. I can't imagine anyone getting more flight time than me lately. I got spare batteries and I bring my charger along. I fly about 25 to 30 sorties a day in the mornings and evenings,,,,more when the wind isn't too bad mid day. My electric bill when up about $40 last month,,,,I'm sure due to all the charging I'm doing.
LOL,,,I've only been fishing a few times this summer,,,,,that USED to be my passion,,LOL! ;D

My electric bill jumped about 20 bucks, so I guess I'm only charging/flying half the time you are elk. ;D
That's a pretty nasty crash, but there's no reason it shouldn't fly perfect when it's repaired.
Where in the heck is that Flanker???
Happy landings

Odd how the main blades cut through the tail boom almost every time it lands hard. Also, when the blade strikes the boom you can bet the farm the main shaft is junk.It had to bend to let the blades dip that low Great to hear how well you're flying. The crashes are just a simple side effect ;D

Oh,by the way,I still don't allow any locktite around my helis ;D
These fasteners are just to small and fragile to be needing a breaker bar to remove them.lol...

Wow, that's a shame Elk, but I have to say, that's exactly how I've crashed a few times, and most were also full throttle in!! I seem to lose it more when I try to do flips at low altitude. Here's a typical look...I think I have more pics like this somewhere...

Ouch Dave, that's one messy crash!
So how was the trip to Montana Randy, or did you go yet?
Understand what you're saying about the other hobbies, I've only made it out to golf twice this year. Any other day that has sun and little/no wind and I'm out flying! At least you can figure out a way to combine fishing and flying, I don't think I'll be able to do that with golf and flying, but I'm open to suggestions.

Should have all my parts tomorrow,,,,which is cool,,,the weather looks really bad tomorrow,,,good day to stay in the shop and fix my bird.
Man,,,,no short cuts anymore,,,,,ordered the SS screw kit this time. I have the kit for the 450 and 600,,,I 'thought' I'd have enough screws in there for my 500 but nooooo,,,,,every thing on the 500 is tweeners. Why couldn't they use the 3mm stuff on the 500,,same on 600,,,but the 500 has all this 2.5mm carp. I had to grind the flybar rod off just so I could save the seesaw,,,the flybar cage is toast,,,just 'cause these junk set screws.
