Nice article, I still have to read all of it, but I have already learned something - and I bet I am not the only one to do this. Do you turn on your heli, let it initialize in HH mode, then move it to your 'launch area'? (after letting is sit for 15 seconds or so first) I have a bad back, so I always use a bench or table to strap in the battery, plug it in, then let it initialize, ....wait 15 to 20 seconds, then move it about 20 feet to where I want to take off - A heading hold gyro wants to maintain a heading. It doesn't know that you carried it to another spot. If you move the helicopter and happen to put it down facing a different direction, the gyro will provide correction and return the helicopter to its original heading as soon as it lifts off. This could be quite unnerving. If you need to move the helicopter after you turn it on in heading hold mode, simply do one of the following:
• Leave the gyro in heading hold mode and move the rudder stick around while carrying the helicopter and keep moving it until just after you put it down.
• Switch the gyro to rate mode, move the helicopter, then return the gyro to heading hold mode.
If you choose option one, better have a throttle hold

Flyinghigh, I do it both ways. Sometimes I turn it on when on the bench and carry it to flight line. Other times I plug it in out on the flight line. One of the clubs here frowns on powering up on the bench with a heli.
What I did though that makes it easy is that I tied the gyro gain to the throttle hold switch. When in throttle hold, the gyro is in rate mode. It's in HH mode while the switch is normal. So, carrying the heli around puts the heli in rate mode. I have not done any autorotations, but I 'think' I would also rather have the gyro in rate mode during an auto. I don't know there. Kent
