10 knots is a pretty stiff breeze to learn to fly in, but if you do fly in that, you'll need at least a 450 size heli.
Spending a lot of time on a sim is a good decision.
A shaft drive heli is not very forgiving in crashes. I'd stay away from them. Belt drives are much easier and less expensive to repair.
Happy landings

I prefer shaft driven tails but I agree with 19 that you should start with a belt. The shaft drives break something every time the tail touches the ground and as a new flyer, that will be often. Wait until you can take off and land 100% of the time without dragging the tail.
Like Elk,my skills took off fast when I got a Helicommand system and a larger heli. I was flying a while before but never without a struggle. I did some forward flight and hovered alot in my driveway. After I got the Helicommand,I was taking to the sky in a matter of days.

...One thing. I have learned very fast to fly the GT3 i was even flying in moderate wind even reversed and side on. The problem was the stupid wind gets a bit to much here because due to my area on the coast (lots of coastal winds) usually calm in mornings and before night though, And i dont have anything close near me indoors, But what i have is a model air field club near me and many many fields that are massive flat low soft grass... Well, there's your answer. A lot of guys like to fly early in the AM or early evening just to get calm air. This being your summer down there, you should be getting lots of daylight early as well as late.

nice, ok so I would be looking at either a big lama or a 450, depending on if i just want to fly the lama in no winds in morning and just before night or alternatively the 450 so i can at least fly a bit longer during the day in the breeze.
2 days ago i downloaded the demo for Real-flight G4 sim, you probably know this one to. lol it just works with keyboard in demo so cant do much but what i can see is how the aircraft handle. the jam tin can sound of crashing is kinda funny to.
thanks for all you good advice guys.

Crashes great Dave No fake plinkty plink when you crash. Realistic noise and parts going everywhere. It's fun to crash different ways just to see it come apart. dube, It's a step up from clearview. It's the most realistic sim I've seen. Happy landings

I'm still a fan of my Exceed RC Blue Ray 450. I bought it RTF and its been nothing but good to me. Ready to go with 3D right out of the box (mild 3D that is). It's 100% T-Rex compatible, which means you can buy parts anywhere, at any store or online, and you don't have to worry about availability.
I would say that's the best bang for your buck. Its an easy upgrade to Spektrum radio's too, which I swear by. I took that BR from mild 3D to hot 3D just by using my DX6i.
Best of luck!

I'm a huge fan of my Exceed RC Blue Ray 450. Flew great right out of the box, even mild 3D. It's 100% T-Rex compatible which means you can get quality parts anywhere.
Bump up to the Spektrum RC radios and receivers and that bird will be a 3D machine!
Best bang for my buck, in my opinion.
