Has anyone tried this mod? Here's a video of a pretty interesting test. I may explore this further.

Yep, dditch has done that on his 500. Maybe others as well, but he can speak to that.

Do the newer style grips which incorporate the counterweight accomplish the same thing? Like the ones on the Align 450 pro?

BT,,,I just looked at the 450 Pro,,you are right,,,they advertise it as the 'centrigal forces balance tail rotor holder'. I wonder if this is will be the new standard in newer models.

Where do you get that bolt/nut or how do you make it?

Ernie,,,I've seen a couple different methods. Helifreak had a thread on them. Some guys drill and tap the blade grips just outboard of the bearings and use linkage balls. I see where others are just using really long blade bolts with a nut on each end.
I just thought the video test was enlightening,,,,I may try the long blade bolt approach. I bet someone will produce a mod for this once it gets more attention.

Where do you get that bolt/nut or how do you make it? PM dditch. He's talked about it on his thread at RCGroups.

www.mycoolheli.com/chineseweightmod.htmlYes, it helps. It takes much of the load off of the servo. An unloaded servo is faster than a loaded down servo. One of the reasons a digital servo works better on the tail is this force acting against it. When I did the 450, I measured the force and it went from I recall around 25-30oz (linear force) down to about 6-10oz. I don't recall measuring the 500, but I did spool it up to test that I did not put too much weight. Too much weight and it will make it worse as the forces try to draw the slider OUT instead of to the middle which will make a nasty wag. Hiem Joint makes a kit for the 500 I looked at drilling and tapping but that requires you to pull everything off and drill at the exact same location for all 4 grips or you will possibly add some tail balance issues. The bolt/washer/nut method is so easy and you can take it off if you like not to mention you get the added benefit of a nyloc on the blade grips now. BTW, MSH Protos also has weight mod built into it. helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=105189

The T-Rex 250SE also has the counter-weighted tail blade grips.

I don't see what your seeing. I see nuts on the blade grips but those just look like normal nuts. Not long enough to make much of a significant difference.

well maybe what I'm looking at isn't what it seems or maybe I just think so the pic's really aren't very good to see for sure. Just looks like the bolt heads are further out which would allow for the weight to be inset in the blade grips. But wouldn't be the first time I be wrong ;D and most likely not the last

I've seen that his topic has been floating around the forums for about 3 years. I take it some of the heli manufacturers are starting to incorporate it into their birds?
