One minute into flight the motor instantly dropped to about 50% power,,,,I brought it in for landing and jsut before I landed the ESC started smoking. By the time I got it shut down it was hidden in a cloud of black smoke. I hurried to get the canopy off and disconnect the battery,,,then I grabbed the camera,,you still see a little smoke coming from it.
The ESC is fried and the battery puffed and melted the heat shrink on it. There is no other damage to anything,,,even the canopy survived un-scathed. I have no idea what caused it. Thats a $200 Castle Creations HV 85 amp ESC and a $150 TP battery,,,OUCH! I'm sending in the ESC,,I hope they replace it under warranty. I'm not sure if TP has any warranty on their batteries,,,anyone know?
I ordered an Align 75 amp ESC,,,if they replace the CC with a new one I'll sell it. I can't wait for the CC,,I have the FBL system coming this week.
Anyway,,,I thought is was a nice save,,,had the heli been further away,,it would have been much worse!!

I'm sure you've also checked the motor and gearing for a possible bind that could have overloaded the ESC. If it was the ESC I hope they replace it for you. It just seems curious that the ESC would take down the battery too. Most ESC failures don't do that in my experience. But what do I know? ;D Good thing you had the external BEC so that you had control for the save.

If a FET transistor fails shorted in the ESC, it would do that.
If a wire didn't short somewhere, it's likely just the ESC. These motors are pretty robust.
I have had two Align ESCs and one crap Mystery brand fail. Kent

Well,,,back in the air. I ordered the Align 75 Amp ESC from Readyheli on Saturday,,they shipped that day,,I received it today (Tuesday) at noon and was back in the air by 1:00. I like Readyheli,,,they don't piss around!!
I ran it on the bench without main blades for a couple minutes,,everything checked out. Hovered for a minute and landed to check for heating,,,then flew 3 minutes and it landed with everything cool.
It must have been the other ESC simply failed,,there is nothing wrong with anything on the heli.
Tracking shows my 3G FBL kit will be here thursday!

Sweet Randy. I love readyheli, they get stuff out to you so freakin' fast. I ordered my Protos kit on Friday and it came in on Monday. No messin' around over there. Glad to hear you're back up and running too. Hope you have luck with CS at castle creations. Can't wait to see the heli flying FBL. Looks very sweet, just waiting for the price to go down and sorta waiting for the AR Drone to come out too
