Here is the second F-22 foamie that I have built. This one is powered by the Grayson 'Super Sonic' motor. This thing really screams on the bench! I have not had a chance to fly it yet, as the wind has been really strong. I hope the wind calms down soon! I really don't care for the color scheme. Bummer. I'll probably highlight it at some point. The foam: 9mm 1.3# EPP from Grayson hobbies (www.graysonhobby.com) The electronics: 2 x HXT-900 servos in an elevon configuration. 1 x AR6110 receiver. Grayson GH2212-06 VII 2200kv motor. 6" x 4 pitch prop. Volcano 30 amp ESC. 1300ma 25c 3s battery. ============

Whoah! That thing should scream in the sky as well. The Stryker is only an 1880 KV motor. Gotta get a report from you on this thing.

looks great kent, but dont you think the rx is to close to the motor.may cause interferance. just a thought.

If it came loose it could get sucked into the prop.

I like the color scheme, but I am learning not to put too much TLC into them before the maiden ;D
Are you going to use that spinner or a prop saver?

TLC?? Heehee! I don't put much of that in these, for sure! It's just slap it together and go fly! Purdy is for EDF's! === I do plan on running what's in the picture for the prop adapter/spinner. I did try a prop saver, but the rubber band would just fly off! This motor is stout!
As to the receiver proximity to the motor/esc, I looked with my spectrum analyzer and there is basically zero noise in the 2.4ghz region from the motor or esc. I have a probe that I can measure that with. So, I'm not worried about that. I think if one were running 72mhz you would be in BIG trouble, though! These spew all kinds of RF at lower frequencies! I used the black 3M velcro on the receiver. I don't think it will come loose. Kent

I had the 3M velcro on my Rx come loose on my F117 and it wasn't even in the airflow. It was inside the fuse. There must have been some amount of air pressure in there to do that.

YES, if you are running 2.4ghz, I think the range can easily be affected if the receiver is surrounded by anything conductive, such as your aluminum tape, or a heli's carbon fiber or aluminum frame. These become partial Faraday cages at that point. 2.4ghz is very easily shielded, as your microwave oven shows. Water readily absorbs 2.4ghz too, so on a very humid day, your range will be reduced a little also. I am really pretty surprised that the Spektrum stuff works as well as it does! I have four 2.4ghz Wifi bridges and access points right here that I have even modded for higher power. The Spektrum stuff just works and isn't bothered at all by this. These Spektrum transmitters do pump out considerable power, though. I have never had a brownout ever with these radios, that I know of. If you are running 72mhz, the wavelengths are much longer and can penetrate much better, so a conductive frame should have much less effect. If you were to completely cover your P51 with aluminum tape, if I were you, I'd at least run a 2.4ghz receiver with a remote and stick that remote outside of the plane. Otherwise, it would be prudent to put the receiver in a place that had no tape around it. On my heli's, I run the receiver sticking out the lower rear with a remote stuck on the side. An AR6200 setup this way has quadruple the range of an AR6100 inside the frame rear. I tested that with the Exi 450, when I had a DX6i. I have not done that test again with the DX7. Wow, that's scary about the rx velcro coming loose. In the case of this F22, it would be chewed up in an instant! I think I'll stick a tie wrap through there, just in case. Kent

She says I am more retentive than an engineer. I say not possible. But I poke and tweak these things constantly and then hate to see anything get a little beat up. I guess I am more retentive

Speak of the freaking devil!! It's too horrible outside, so I was playing with the F-22 in here. Two guesses what happened here and the first one doesn't count. UGH! Attachments:

I guess I am more retentive Hey BT, that's what techs are for! I need to hire you! Actually, I am anal about my electrical designs, and I do poke and tweak these helis a LOT. I hate a heli that doesn't look or fly as perfectly as I can get it to be. I also love the looks of the L-39 EDF and the P-51 that I have. Those I want to keep looking good. These foamies though? Nah. I LOVE FLYING these things! I do things with them that I would never dream of doing with the P-51 or others that are more fragile. These smack in, and survive! Yeah, they get bruises and do get chunks out of em, but nothing major! And a little glue makes em fly great again! Or, as you saw with the Yak, you can just slap in some chunks of replacement foam and it's good to go! Actually, I'm not sure how you would build an EPP anything that looked great. It's just an ugly foam that is indestructible for the most part, at least for me. Best, Kent

Oh, and Depron foam makes a MUCH prettier plane. It's just too fragile and crunches too easily. Here's an EDF that I built a while back: I had the CG a little too far forward and it didn't handle for crap. A moderately hard landing turned it into this, and it wasn't even a 'crash': I have smacked in my EPP stuff way harder than that. Kent

Well, better there than at speed. Then you would have lost the whole plane. I'd zip tie everything in front of that screaming motha. Thanks for all the info on the aluminum/2.4. That's a good idea about the second Rx. I think I'll mount it in the cockpit outside of the aluminum tape area.

Best, Kent Yep, I do the poke and tweak thing at work when I am putting something new in place, adding features, etc. I may need a job after I get my next neurosurgeon's report. May very well be a career changer I'll start packing my stuff and filling out change of address cards. What's your zip code? My problem is I love pretty, clean work. I can visualize it, but I can't seem to produce it to my satisfaction. I am the ultimate diagnostician and technician. I figure out how to make it work or what the problem is. Let someone else make it pretty and put it in the prints ;D That sucks about the RX (pun intended ;D) I see $$$$
