I think the sound is because it's a ramjet instead of a multistage turbine. They cost a lot less, but they make kind of a popping sound.

Actually, the original Ducted Fan's were nitro powered. That's probably a .90 nitro motor in that one. The pipe in the exhaust and the smoke is a giveaway.
They were fast in the back in the 80's! Kent

19k, you might have been thinking of this old jet???
None of these will spin an fan, but they produce thrust from combustion.
