Gentlemen:
I was asked this the other day and drew a total blank. Thought I'd throw it out to the crowd and see if we've a winner, eh?
And here it is:
Exactly how, what or what system is used to determine helicopter "size"? Is it like french fries, where it's a total SWAG, or is there a realistic measurement involved?
Case in point: I compare my V400D02 to my EXI 450: One is shorter than the other....mast to tail box...by about an inch. Is there a factor there somewhere?
Second, how does this electric scale system compare to the nitro size system? What size electric compares directly to, say, oh, a .30? 60? 90?
I know I may shooting loops with this one, but...I am puzzled by this and how do you explain this to someone outside the hobby in a way that makes any sense?
The benefit I can see of an explanation? One, shopping for scale fuses, oh, yes. Like that.
Okay, let's go get some more coffee....

I believe it goes by weight I could be wrong here but I thought I read it somewhere.. ;D Ray

Hmmm...good question. I know that a 90 scale is equivalent to a 700, and a 50 scale is in between a 500 and 600.

.30 nitro uses a 0.30 cu. in. engine and swings 550mm blades....550 size. .50 nitro has a 0.50 cu. in. engine and swings 600mm blades....600 size. .90 nitro has a 0.91 cu. in. engine and swings 700mm blades....700 size.
It used to be simpler until Align polluted the system with the Trex. The Logo 400 has 425mm blades. Logo 500 has 550mm. Logo 600 has 600mm.
Align is all over the place.100,250,450,500,550,600,700...who knows?

I read that RCGroups thread a while ago and it's typical of many. Nobody really knows, although I think the relation to the brushed motor size makes the most sense. Of course, that's all out the door now that brushless is the defacto power for electric helis today.

Like Ern said it all started out nice and orderly with nitro and then it just plain went to hell between TREX and the proliferation of other electric manufacturers.
Now it's not so much "a" size but more of a range within loosely configured limits, to be detrmined in the marketing department, based on what they'd like to be compared to and not so much based on components, like blade length, which would be too easy to compare and expose the fudgers.

You'd think it would be something simple like blade size or engine size. Oh well.

I can see the blade size at a good reference for ship size, the motor thing may be misleading, but as the boss always says, it ain't my sandbox, I just play in one corner.
But, thanks, guys!

To me blade size would be the most accurate or make the most sense it would at least give you a base to start with.. Ray
