Been having issues with the 500 class helis cant seem to make them fly Well purchased a hk esc 85 amp with program card set it up and then installed it came with a on off switch very cool idea well turned it on and poof goes all the magic smoke dang it
Well back to the drawing board LOL
So I call up my lhs and see what they have for a esc big enough to run a 500 size machine ? Well they say they have the fix and I say OH OK what is it and the answer is a ccpheanix lite esc 75 amp cool heard good things about them .
So $122.50 later and a weeks Waite it comes in the mail yeah.
So I go home from the post office and solder up all the connections and install the esc on the heli looks really good sitting on it too
this where the bad day comes in I turn on the TX then I plug in the esc and wtf
It seems the ice lite was better all right it let the magic smoke out of one servo one motor and one rx before having its own meltdown
all this before I could get the plug disconnected I am thinking that me and 500 size heli's are never going to see eye to eye
just had to vent new parts are on order. does anyone know of a decent esc that will just work

I couldn't see what the link was, but I'm assuming it's the Hobbywing Platinum 80amp ESC? If that's the case, mine is still going strong on my EXI 500 as well.
The only downfall is that the super soft start setting isn't super soft at all. You really gotta ease up on the throttle. I've stripped out several main gears and belt drive gears by giving her "normal" throttle to spool up.

I checked and double checked my electrical connections all are where they are supposed to be. Thats not a bad price on the 80 amp esc I'm sending the cc back for repairs I ordered a new rx and three cyclic servos plus a new Scorpion 1600 kv motor If that don't get it done I'm selling all three 500s cause it wasn't meant to be

You almost had to have a defective motor or something causing a direct short to melt down two esc's there is something a miss here.. Ray

Yes Ray I'm thinking the same thing the servo smoked first so am on the side of direct short at the servo I checked the motor with an ohm meter and have continuity on all three wire I don't know if they should be that way or not

Wow! That's a really odd meltdown!
Yep, my 500 has hundreds of flights on it now, still with the Hobbywing Platinum 80. I have now worn out several bearings, two sets of head dampeners, and the links on the head! I fly this thing a LOT!
I really don't think you need a new ESC though. The Castle's are a nice premium ESC. I agree that something else may have been wrong, but any ESC can smoke. Castle should fix that for free. They do most of the time that I've read about.
You will be happy with the Scorpion motor. These are powerhouses and last. I just make sure to oil the bearings every 10 flights or so, or when I remember! The oil kits are cheap.
Unless you have a milliohm meter, your brushless motors will read a short between the leads. These are essentially shorts. The ESC gives them short but high current pulses to spin them, alternating between each pair of legs (3 sets of phases).
You'll get her there, Ak. Kent

Thanks guys I was talking with a buddy of mine today and mentioned what happened yesterday He just went WOW then he asked what battery I was using he had a similar thing happen to him and what he said made some sense the battery is messed up he had thunderpower battery do the same thing to him I checked the battery voltage today and 5 of the cells are running4.14 to 4.17 the sixth cell is running 4.53 Do you guys suppose just maybe it was the battery with over voltage and spiked the electronics ;D

No that is about nominal voltage and the parts are made to take a little higher volts for a short period of time but do recheck the polarity. Take ohm meter to the motor set it on the most sensitive setting and check all three leads to see if there exactly the same then check each one against each other. Then check to the housing and to the shaft and see if you get any reading there if you do it is a short or if between leads it is slightly off there maybe a problem. It is not the perfect way to check but you may find it.. Ray

OK new question for the battery experts LOL I just charged up this battery and the end voltage on this battery was 28.59 volts would that be enough to make my electronics have a meltdown like they did I thought maximum voltage was supposed to be 25.2 volts ;D

I don't think 28.6v will do any damage, but that's definitely high. You could check the ESC output with that wonky 6S and see how close it is to 4.8v (or 6v if you've chosen that). I also don't like the fact that you're running 4.53v on one cell. Maybe time to check your charger with a decent VOM. 4.2v per cell is the suggested limit (25.2v total on a 6S)
I had a 3 cell that had 5+v on one cell for some strange reason. I chucked it.

Well I have come to the conclusion that the battery is bad and I think my charger is at fault as the balancer system in the charger has quit so there was only one thing to do and this is it ;D

I hope everyone made it out alive . Guess that's one way to get rid of a bad situation. Sorry you had to loose the hole bird that way. Maybe you will have better luck with the next charger and battery.
