I tried to get home from work in time to get it tuned but... I have all day tomorrow. My neighbor came out, wasn't pissed, but was wondering (with a scowl)

Thanks Phil! I've had this one in the air before though, but it's really smoking and burning through fuel. I also tried to punch it from a head high hover and had a flame out. I took the needles back to factory since there was a climate change from Ernie's house to mine.
My problem is, a lot of smoke and fuel usage at the low end, but the back plate is still getting warmer than it should (I think). I've seen some videos where they (Finless, Bobby Watts) say the back plate should be cool, but that's a relative term. Cooler than what? I can hold my hand on it all day, but it's still a lot warmer than my body temp, or ambient temp.
I haven't had a decent chance to tune in the mid range or high end, but I'm going to try to make that happen today.

Yes I believe you will have to lean your engine out some as mc is in a colder climate than you are I have to run mine really rich also during the break in time and also when it is cold out because the air is denser which can make for a lean setting on the engine and that would not be good I was just wondering how much time mc had on that engine and if you need to run break in time on it or you should just tune it and fly ;D

Ernie said he put a little more than a gallon through it, but didn't feel he flew it long enough to get a good tune. Many schools of thought on how long to break in, and how to fly to break in. According to the "manual" for the engine, OS engines don't require a long break in period: "However, because O.S. engines are made with the aid of the finest modern precision machinely and from the best and most suitable materrials, only a very short and simple running-in procedure is required and can be carried out with the engine installed in the modle. For the first few flights with a new engine i.e. while the engine is being run-in set the needle-valve for a slightly rich mixture not excessively rich as this may result in poor throttle response and cause the engine to stope. About 1.5 turn open from the nomal setting will usually suffice." - O.S. .50 Hyper Manual So it's probably broken in well enough to handle the way I fly. The way I fly, I don't have constant load on the head. I'm just worried because I like to take them out far and bring them back fast. I don't want a flame out and not realize it until its too late. Anyway, I'm installing some new servos today and should have it flying by this afternoon. I'll do a walk around video then a flight video later.

So Doozer I noticed in the first post it said 12AM.
And it was dark outside, and your neighbor came out to see what the darn noise was.
So what time was it when you were running it up and hovering.

Man... I'm not that big of a weenie. I had to upload the movie to my computer, edit the movie, upload it to my new Google account that I didn't have a password for... took a bit of time. Also you have to remember the time difference, but to answer your question it was about 6:30pm.
My neighbor has watched my progression through helis for a few years now. The first time I spun up the 600esp he came outside too. He said "Man that thing is cool." The next sentence was "It's a lot louder than your little ones." So I imagine this was a bit of a surprise. I think he thought it was on fire because I've never hovered a nitro in my driveway before. My son, who was taking the video was like "damn dad, that's loud." I may start it and let it idle in the driveway, but I wont do that again.

That 1.5 turn out beyond normal is crazy. The needle should be out about 1.5 turns PERIOD.lol......
I was around 1.25 to 1.5 turns out and getting more than 9 minutes of good power from a tank.
Here's a look at a very early tuning hover. This was actually about right. Good smoke and temp.
190-210 degrees is ok on the backplate.
Excuse the no governor over speeding.lol....
The Hyper 50 can run some crazy RPM's btw.

That was what I needed to see. Perfect! I've watched other helis during tuning but seeing the right amount of smoke out of the engine I'm flying is nice. Thanks dude. I didn't get a chance to fly this afternoon. I wanted to, but getting the servos installed took a little longer than I thought it would. I went on a search for the perfect servo horns. I'm still not happy with the elevator horn. All but one are 90 now. I had all four 90, but snapped an arm trying to screw in the ball.

You know Helidirect has Outrage 20% nitro for $64 a case right now? Shipping is high but if you get two cases, shipping is free.
That's $16 a gallon for some class A fuel.
I'm ordering two cases tomorrow.

Man Mckrackin, if i started that up in my town, the law would be here in a minute lol. Very nice heli you have there. I think before I ever get into nitros, they are going to have to get quieter mufflers. It would drive me crazy to have to listen to that. Or maybe ear plugs would work.

Tried to fly the Frenzy yesterday. Had a bit of bad luck. No crashes, but almost... Last week I was tuning it and hit a rock with the tail when I landed it. One of my tail blades sheared. I checked the tail out and it seemed fine. I put on new tail blades and put it back in the air. Yesterday, as I was spooling it up, the gyro tried to correct on the ground and the vertical stabilizer dug into the dirt. This spun the tail box on the boom. Throttle hold saved my ass, because the heli was going to tip if I hadn't hit the switch. I guess when I hit that rock I did a little more damage than I thought. I spun the tail box back and spooled it up again. This time the vert stab didn't dig in, but the tail box spun anyway. So I hit throttle cut and head home. I have a spare boom, belt, and tail ready to slap on if I need it, but I decided to drill a hole in the tail box and insert a small screw to act as a set screw. It works great. I'm looking forward to flying today.
