Hello everybody, been a while. Been much water under bridge, and a few new helos since my last post. Let me start filling in the blanks so I can ask my questions. Sorry I'm going to type so much.
Now have a Thunder Tiger Titan 50. Destroyed the stock motor trying to break it in, finally chased it down to a restricted fuel tank fixture. Replaced with a Redline .53 and smoothie pipe. Got almost 2 1/2 gallons of Cool Power 15% Heli through it. The start is good, very easy. Idle is solid. Spoolup starts strong, then just below hover RPM it "loads up". Will pull through and fly, am running two govenor speeds 1650 and 1800. On 1800 runs no worries, doesn't have quite as much power as I expected, but I could be wrong. Off gov, the engine starts to bog just at hover or just below is PITA to try to land, loses head speed it wants to drop. I am thinking I am not 'balanced' between the high/low jets. My question- How in the world do you figure which jet which way? What brought me to the keyboard is Monday was flying, I'm just getting into steady forward flight with this one, was low gov {1650} when noticed there is almost no smoke, I mean zip. Motor didn't seem in distress, but I went to high gov and smoke returned. My thinking on what happened is I'm now unloading the engine and gov closed carb down to the out of tune point? I know I haven't covered all the needed details, but maybe enough to get a discussion started on how to tune for torque instead of max rpm

So what are your needles set at now your high and low needles .
I dont think 15 % nitro will give you lots of power.
I use 20 % with 20% oil I run mine rich too low needle set at 1.5 and high needle at 1.75 gives me plenty of power to fly with

akphil, my needles are set at low 1/16 out and high 1/8 out from breakin start point. Power I'm not overly concerned with, unless it's an indication I'm too rich. For 15% the power is there. Actually, on high gov. the engine is running strong. On full stick 'punch' from hover the engine loads but does not bog. But, I'm not going to be running constantly WOT, hope to get this thing in a fuselage someday. The bog / stutter at hover, and the decrease in smoke Monday is worrisome. I think it would run alot better if it was tuned right, but I'm guessing.

What I would suggest is go to smacktalk.com and buy there nitro setup video its a couple bucks but well worth the money they show you how to setup your nitro motor

Well hang in there I don't flip flop thru the air either and I am not sure I am the one to answer your question's as I am not fully understanding your question I guess Have you checked your engine temps lack of smoke could be a lean condition and your engine will be a lot hotter than it should be try richen it up a little couple clicks make sure all your fuel lines are in good shape too no air leaks

akphil, my bad. It's not a simple question/condition. Should be, used to be, but now is forgotten skill I am trying to tune an engine to run in other than WOT, with low headspeed, for scale flite conditions. Am SWAGing alot here, but so far its been not much else. Am having a surge loadup stutter loss of smoke at 'odd' times, I am thinking that I do not have the correct ratio between high / low jet. Was asking what are indicators to show which jet which way to give smooth transitions back and forth between the jets during flight. Details I HAVE nailed down so far, An OS engine transitions low/high jet at roughly 50% throttle position, it flys on the high jet. This Redline transitions at 75%. The "I always put it at 1.5" will not work. My base is 3 turns also. At this point, I doubt everything I've been told, because I've been told everything.

when your excelerating the throttle if you get some gurgeling you can adjust your low needle to take thiis out but not too much even if it gurgles a little is ok then you need to adjust high needle to get best performance and then when you have those as close as possible to running correctly for your lower headspeed you turn your throttle curve down to get your desired headspeed and another way of doing that would to put a governor on it and dial your headspeed you want hope this helps
