I bought an Exceed Rc Alpha 370 brushless motor a while ago for my scratchbuilt foamies, and now it quit working. I'm guessing its a loose connection because it acts as if only two of the wires are plugged in. Sometimes it works but most of the time it moves back and forth almost like glitches when throttle is applied. I resoldered all 3 of the connectors thinking its a bad connection on the motor but it still does it. I tried a different esc but it still does the same thing. Exceed uses these tiny wires that are put in to wire tubing twice the size of the wire making it really fragile. Anyone have any suggestions on what else to do?

Well, boss, you got part of the troubleshoot done: Swapped out to another ESC. All that's left is to, yeppers, swap to another motor and watch for the results.
If the solder connections are sweated properly, it then sounds like an intermittent connection inside the motor. Wiggling the wires as you said may prove or disprove such, but from what you're saying, the motor's gone to see Elvis. Sucks, but that's the process.
Hope that helps.

Yep. Time for a new motor it sounds like to me as well. It is surprising how fragile the wires are on many of these brushless motors. I have had motors do exactly what you are seeing. These motors are rewindable, if you feel adventurous! I have rewound a couple of motors with good results. I'm getting ready to rewind one of my E-F1 race motors that burned up... There is a lot of info about that here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240993Kent

What you think

I think you guys are right on a new motor, which is to bad I only probably have about 50-75 flights on this motor. Oh well like they say you get what you pay for. Now I need suggestions on a new motor, was looking at Hobbypartz again and they want $11 for shipping a $16 motor.
Whatever happened to there $5 flat rate charge for parts or was that Xheli?
Rewinding a motor sounds like alot of work. lol
Anyone have any experience with the Exceed Rc Optima Series of motors? Do they still have the junk wires? HZ has a 10% off coupon right now for Exceed motors.

Free shipping at Hobbypartz was always a good selling point. Now you've got to spend $50 to get it. Too bad.

Hey RC not much help now but what I have done when I suspect there will be problems with thin wires from the motor I mix a little epoxy and glue the wires to the housing as they leave the motor. This insures the wire will not vibrate and break inside the motor. An outside the motor break is much more easy to find and repair.
Now having said that take off the snap ring pull the motor apart remove the heat shrink and look for a break before it goes into the windings. You may just get lucky.. Ray

Heck ya thanks Ray. Took the motor apart for the third time and pulled all the heat shrink off the red wire and what do you know the wire was broke in two. Soldered it back together and it works as good as new. Tried it several times and it still works great.

Well I got bad news, that didn't solve it. Went out to fly and flew great, came in for a landing, and tried the motor a few seconds later and it does the same old thing. I thought for sure that would of solved it. There must be a second thing wrong with it.

Well if it had a broken wire and that solved it for one shot look again or recheck the solder joint. When they cog back and forth the three phase motor is trying to single phase so one leg is knocked out. Try again use a jewelers glass if necessary and look for another break or bad connection.. Ray

Ok I'm so confused. I just removed all the heat shrink on all three wires none of them were broke. Resoldered all three connectors. Hooked up the motor still the same thing. Hooked up my exi 450 motor and same thing. Then was going to come on here and post but I tried it just one more time and now both motors work fine. I'm thinking maybe a loose connection in the esc now.

Well I think the esc is toast. I tried everything that I could think of. Including hardwiring the esc to the motor thinking that the connectors had a loose connection but that didn't work. I also heated up the solder joints on the esc that go to the motor thinking that maybe there was a cold solder but that didn't work either. I ended up making an adapter so I could use my 30 amp esc for now until I can get another esc.
