Black Horse Pitts Special It's a 120. This is meant to be a project, and I'm not looking to fly it right away. I want to take my time and learn as I build. My LHS has two, but a shop employee is building one kit. It's $250 + tax.... I like the 4 stroke engine idea. Here's a link to it for sale online: www.sloughrc.com/default.asp?WPG=SRCM_HomePage1&itemid=A-BH085 If they sell the other one by Friday, I might go with the Great Planes Pitts Special. Flying it and landing it well in the Sim.

Nice looking plane. I might opt for the GP model though because of customer support.

Well it's almost a done deal. Went back today and looked at the kit again. Put a little money down on it so he'd hold it until Friday. So I have to start looking at engines, props, servos, fuel tank sizes etc. Got some reading to do. Any links to information that will help will be greatly appreciated.

A guy in my club put this in a Sopwith camel, pretty cool.

Thanks dude. That's a very nice engine. Expensive too. I'm not going nitro though. Strictly gas. Nitro fuel is just too expensive. I wont need two fuel containers at the field. The video got me going in the right direction though. So the video was very helpful. I think I've narrowed it down now. It's between these two: www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/DLE30ENGINE.htmlwww.troybuiltmodels.com/items/DLE20ENGINE.htmlMore than likely gonna go with the first one. For mo' power and better CG. It takes 7 servos, I have a bunch here... some Hyperion UMD's and SMD's. But I know little about how much torque or speed I'll need out of my servos. I can probably piece together the electronics from what I have here. Everything but the Rx. I have a few 6ch rx's laying around, but I'm not sure if I trust them. So I guess I'm looking at a new Rx too .

Do you guys want me to put a build up? It will probably be strung out over some time. I kinda have to pay for this over time. Christmas is coming up quickly.... If so, where. Is the "builds" section just for those jackass heli guys or do [glow=red,2,300]we[/glow], the planker majority get our own builds section. or I could just do this: www.blackhorsemodel.com.vn/products/BH85%20manual-%28Pitts%291.pdf

Great price on those engines. Good choice on the 30. Nothing quite as sorry as having an underpowered sport plane. I think you can get by with servos with 40 Oz's of torque with MG's. Maybe more for the rudder. Speed isn't critical. .18-.24 in 60 degrees. A micro servo should work great for the throttle. If you need a new Rx I suggest getting a full range with a satellite Rx. I also suggest you mount your Rx's on foam to reduce vibration from the engine. Nice jump up from the Stinson. You don't fool around. Yes, put a build up. Manuals don't tell the whole story.

Thanks for the information 19. That's exactly what I'm looking for. There's a terminology/nomenclature bridge I need to cross, and I know enough right now to cost me a lot of money. So... I'm thinking I wont be flying it soon. I figure I'll take my licks with the stinson, do some research and see where my skills are when I finish the plane. If I don't feel like I'm there yet skill-wise when I finish building the Pitts, I'll pick up a gas or nitro trainer used from one of the forums. I just know that eventually this is the plane I want to fly.

Yep, use other forums where there are plenty of guys building and flying gassers in this size. My info is just a starting point.
There isn't a huge learning curve as far as the technical aspects and terminology are concerned. You'll pick it up in no time.
It's a great idea to get a lower end sport plane to hone your skills on. Eflite's ultra sticks are great sport trainers. One could go a long way towards building you sport flying abilities even though it's not gas.

Go ahead and save some dialogue and pics, Doozer. I'll talk to Dave about adding a plank build/mod section.

Ok. Thanks sol. Not a hurry though. won't have it until friday. Probably wont start until Sunday. The pilot in the video said he spent about 20 hrs on it. I'm going to take it nice and slow and put up pics so you guys can show me where I've gone wrong.

Doozer, the DLEs are beasts!! Awesome engines with huge power! Several folks here fly them. Every one has fired up and ran the same when breaking in as they did a few gallons of fuel later. You usually don't need to touch the carb settings, ever!!! They just run!
Those front carbed gassers don't run very well. Folks here have tried them.
Also, the DLE's run best with the stock muffler. The Pitts mufflers don't quite have the power of the stocker... Also, you don't need much of a gas tank. An 8 ounce tank will run the DLE 30 for a LONG time!! You will need a separate BEC for the electronic ignition. Be careful not to go over 6 volts on these. They will fry... Kent

Great info! thanks kent. You just saved me some money. DLE it is. How are they breaking them in? I like the looks of a 3 prop set up with a chrome spinner. What do you think. Are there advantages or disadvantages to this type of set up? Which has better power and should I break in with a different size prop?

Those DLE's are nice.
Generally speaking: 3 Blades will give you more thrust while 2 blades are better for speed.
