Great info! thanks kent. You just saved me some money. DLE it is. How are they breaking them in? I like the looks of a 3 prop set up with a chrome spinner. What do you think. Are there advantages or disadvantages to this type of set up? Which has better power and should I break in with a different size prop? The guys here run a different prop and different oil ratios for break in. I helped a fellow on Sunday with a new DLE 30 in a 72" Edge. He ran an 18x8 2 blade prop and he was running 30:1 oil. The break in oil is supposed to be dino oil. He used Quicksilver (for Mercury marine outboards). The gas was pump premium. He kept the RPM's above 4,000 for the first tank. He said that he would go up to a 19x8 or a 20x6 prop after the first gallon. A three blade equivalent should be no problem. Man, a gallon is going to be a LONG time off! We ran one tank through it on the ground (8 ounce tank) and then he flew the plane. We did not touch the carb! Here was the brand new starting procedure that he used (It's his third DLE): 1. Choke on (he had the choke on a servo). Ignition off. 2. Turn the motor over until you see gas get up to the carb. 3. Ignition on. 4. Flip the prop until it pops. 5. Choke off. Thottle just past idle. 6. Two more flips and it was running! He ran the motor during the first tank at mid throttle for a minute than WOT for a minute, then back. He was checking the head temps with an IR gun. The first part of the tank saw the head get up to 300 degrees at WOT. The end of the tank saw that drop to 250 or so. At mid throttle it would drop to 200 or less. I think you can get some good info from Troy Built Models. They have all the info on these DLE's. Also, if you haven't heard a DLE 30 in person, they sound GOOD, especially at WOT! They roar pretty well! I like the way they sound better than a 4 stroke. I really like the way that Pitts looks! I might have to save for one, too. I love bipes! Kent

One other thing...If you have a choice between a side carb and a rear carb, be sure to get the rear carb. They run 100 times better. Some planes need some surgery to make them fit, but it shouldn't be a big deal.
Yep, I've been paying attention at the field with all these guys flying gas. I've seen the good and the bad. If (when) I get something that is not electric, it will be DLE powered!
Wait until you hear a 170cc twin!! WOW!! There's one here on a 40% Yak and another on a huge Ultimate bipe. Kent

thanks a bunch kent. I've seen quite a few videos of the engine mounted on a bench and broken in that way. I'm not a big fan of doing that because bad things tend to happen to me. The engine should probably be under some load as well. I'll probably do exactly what you typed above. Sounds like a plan.
My other question... and I know this will open up a can of worms, but since it's got a Walbro carb, I should be able to use Coleman fuel in the DLE wouldn't ya think?. I mean I've read a lot of out dated forum posts about whether or not I should use it. The arguments are always the same and then there's always some schmo like me that has used Coleman in other platforms with great success. I just want to have a plane I can keep in the house and maintain the brain cells I have left (without going electric... somebody was gonna say it -.- )
I've had no problems and no noticeable power loss with my G230 and Coleman... whaddaya think? I'm probably going to use it, but if someone comes up with some useable data about why I shouldn't, I'd be stupid not to consider it.
So I'm going to start a build thread Saturday or sunday. Or maybe friday night if I'm not tired. Just my life's story and a what's in the box. I'll need some advice for sure and please jump in if you think I'm going to screw things up.

All I can say is that all the folks here with DLE's run pump gas. Premium only. And these engines run extremely well.
My abused memory cells seem to indicate that white gas has less energy per volume than regular gas, but that could be wrong.
I don't think you can get any better running than pump gas though. That's what these were designed for.
If you run it, please post about it.
If it were my engine, I wouldn't risk it. Kent

No Kent you are correct white gas does have less energy than pump gas but during WW2 that is all the Germans had and they made it work on ground vehicles there airplanes still used 100 octane gasoline. Sorry for the history lesson Ray

I think I'm going to give it a go. I'll let you know what happens. I've read more than a few posts of people using it in DLE's with no issues... one guy even does 3D with Coleman in his DLE 50. I know I'll be voiding the warranty.
