I have a ton of Electric motors, speed controllers, and servos that were in helis I no longer use. I'd like to use the motors in planes instead of buying new ones... if possible. Any knowledge, guidance someone would like to share would be greatly appreciated. I'm really looking into EF1 pylon racing (ahem... kent), so I'm wondering what is salvageable from my box-o-parts.

Unfortunately, none of the heli motors are suitable for planes...usually too high a kv. Your ESC's will work, even a bit of overkill as planes don't need much in the way of ESC programming. And some of your servos will likely work, albeit some overkill again. Plane servos don't need to be as fast as heli servos. 450 size for smaller planes and 500+ size for larger.
Kent should be able to advise you on motors better than I. Most of my planes are smaller. Plus he has a ton more experience than I do.

I'd agree with sol for the most part. Planes generally don't need the high kV that helis do. Plane motors genrally run from about 2000kV down to th 200's. The larger the motor the lower the kV.
Plank ESC's run from 5Amp to 200Amp. Maybe more. The smaller the motor the lower the ESC A's are. It's important to check the programming. Low, to middle timing and the start can be as high as soft. Brake off.
Servos should be good depending on the servo to plane match. generally 5 to 9 gram servos are used in park flyers and the larger planes 9 up to where torque becomes a big factor. Speed is not that big a deal unless your flying 3D or racing.
Let us know what planes you're planning to match with what components and we can get a little more specific.

Those motors won't work. Too high kV for your shoestring. They would draw way too many AMPS for the props you want to spin. I.e, the motor would burn up if you didn't blow your ESC first and puff your pack... That Shoestring is a beauty BTW. The electric size is based on equivalent to gas motors. a 10 electric is equivalent to a gas .10 and so on. Alright, It's making sense. I've got a Scorp 45A ESC and A Castle 75A... tons of batteries and servos. Enough for a few planes ;D

For the Shoestring, you want to just stay with the racing approved parts, I would think. That way, you will have your pants on fire for sport flying and then you will be ready to race!!
There are three approved motors right now, with a fourth likely soon. Of these motors, I would recommend either the Eflite or the OS. The Eflite is the Power 25 1250kv. The OS is the OS 25 1200kv. The Shoestring was designed around the Eflite. The OS is shorter and will need perhaps a custom spacer machined for it, or you might be able to use some piled up washers or something.
For an ESC, I would go with either the Castle ICE Lite 75 or the Turnigy 85. I would NOT recommend the Turnigy Plush 60, as some of these motors will pull a lot more than 60 amps.
For servos, you can run Hitec HS85's or similar, but I like the Turnigy D-Mg16's. I'm running these on my Pogo. They work great and are only 8 bucks each for digital with metal gears. I am running HS85's on my Miss Dara. I like the cheap ones better!
You will have a 110 to 120mph racer with any of these parts.
The reason I didn't recommend the Turnigy or the Arrowind motor is that the Arrowind is wider and can rub on the cowl and the Turnigy motors just plain burn up. I burned up four of the Turnigy's.
Just my 2c.
Now if you want to sport fly that Shoestring, there are a million possibilities! Generally, you will want to run a lower kv motor with higher voltage, to keep the current down.
How fast do you want to go???
Actually, I ran an HK 1800kv 500 sized heli motor in my Funjet on 6s. It pulled right around 100 amps for a measured 2,300 watts. The thing hit 160mph in a straight line. I came out of a steep dive at WOT and leveled out when it exploded..... I think I found the structural limit of that thing!
