Today I installed the Detrum Gy48 gyro in my Belt Cp. I went out to test it, all was going decent. I was flying forward, about 15 ft. off the ground when all of a sudden it loses all power. Then I helplessly watched as the belt crashed into the ground. I ran over fearing the worst, and inspected the damage. Turns out there wasnt any, not even a cracked canopy. I immediately disconnected the battery fearing that the electronics would short because I landed in snow, not thinking to look at the rx light to see if it was blinking or not.
So I brought it inside connected the battery again and all is fine. Now the problem is trying to pin point the problem. Could a new gyro cause this? This year I have had so many electronic problems, first my scratchbuilt foamies, then my exi 450, and now my belt cp.
Ive had a similar problem with my scratchbuilt foamies using the same exact esc. But the problem I think was with the motor, it wouldnt work right with another esc. It would fly fine for the first minute or two and then all of a sudden would lose power to the motor.
My setup on my belt cp is as follows- Ar6200 Exi S1123 non digital cyclic servos Gy48 Gyro Esky Digital tail servo Stock Esky Brushless motor Exceed rc 30 amp esc
Anyone have any ideas? Im sick and tired of having electronic issues.

You and me both brother Just did a 200 dollar upgrade to the 500 electrics If it was my belt I would have a 45 amp esc on it 30 is a little bit just on the margin of safe size

Yeah, I'm not running anything smaller than a 40A with 3A BEC on my 450's. Not saying that's your problem, but I like to have a little overhead when it comes to covering amp draw.

Sorry to hear you crashed it. Glad there wasn't any damage. Hope you get it figured out. That can be fun... or a pain in the ass. Is the ESC getting hot?

Maybe get a castle esc. Cheap electronics are cheap.
I've had decent electronics for about 3 years now. I've crashed alot but can't blame any of the crashes on electronic failures .

Close call r/c.
It sounds like a brown out. The servos are drawing more current than the ESC can handle at a particular moment and it shuts down. Flying in winter conditions can cause the servos to work harder.
Usually, after a brown out, the system will checkout OK when tested later on.
Either upgrade your ESC to a 40A or add an external BEC. Or both.

Thanks guys, I might get a 40 amp esc then. The esc wasn't getting hot, its only warm after flying it.
First though I might try another 30 amp esc that I just bought, I think the one that I had crashed might be faulty. I had it in my scratchbuilt foamie, and after flying it for a couple minutes the motor would always stop. I would still have control of the servos and Id have to throttle back to zero inorder to start the motor again.
It was like hitting LVC but I would always check the voltage of the lipo and it would still be above 11.5 volts. But the motor didn't work right either when I would try it with another esc it wouldn't run at all. I ended up just buying a new esc and motor.
Im going to buy a 40 amp esc regardless though cause my exi 450 did brown out but Im using 4 digital servos. I'm just sick of electronic issues with all my stuff.

As we talked about before the linear bec degrades with time your esc to the motor is not overheating and loosing power but the 2 amp bec is. A 40 amp esc will give you a 3 amp bec but you may still have problems. Add on a 5 to 10 amp switching bec heck even a cheap one. Otherwise if it starts to starve the servos at the right moment you could loose control and end up with that damn thing in your face... NOT GOOD... Ray

Yes, Ray brought up a good point which I failed to mention earlier. A switchmode BEC. Just as an alternative to adding a BEC, I've had good luck with these (about the only 40A ESC with switchmode BEC that's a decent price), but unfortunately out of stock a lot. www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__3729__TURNIGY_Sentry_40amp_Speed_Controller.htmlOf course, a good add on BEC is something you can switch from project to project if your heli ends up being a shelf queen.

I'm still pushing the ice 50 and icelight 50. The initial cost may hurt but you'll quickly thank yourself for doing it

Thanks again guys, I think a BEC would be a better and cheaper choice. It wouldnt cost quite as much as buying new escs. Then I wouldnt have to worry about brown outs anymore and I can use them on later projects.
So anyone know of any good BECs that would work with my 450s? I see the one that Ray posted, its cheap enough but I dont need anything else from HK so shipping would be kind of expensive and I dont want to wait a month for something urgent like this. Thanks.

Thats a good price for something from Castle, I think Ill pick one up. I did a little research on this BEC and I can use it on a variety of helis and planes.
