In the past horizon has been very overpriced on 400 sized helis. The quality and performance just weren't there to justify the cost to most customers. I think they have caught up some on the quality and performance thing, but the price is still a little high.
And you're right; no way to build from a heli airframe kit. I think this is because they are, essentially, an RTF, BNF & ARF type of seller. It's been a successful business model for them. They target the customers who want the kind of convenience that allows them to; buy it today, fly it today...or at the latest, this weekend, and they leave kits for others to supply.

I think you hit the nail on the head 19k. Horizon aims for the crowd of people that want to buy a heli, take it home, spend 5 minutes and be in the air, and thats the price they pay. If they sold there helicopters as a kit or arf you could set it up with decent electronics for half the cost. The 300 looks really nice but not for $380. But Horizon cant sell it too much lower cause then it would devalue the fbl unit that they sell for $200 alone.
