Well, I knew it was going to happen and I'm certain you did too. It was a matter of time.
By now everyone's seen the news about the commercial jet landing in DC encountering a multi-rotor "drone" at 1500 ft on his approach. I wonder if it was an idiot hobbyist or idiot terrorist that sent it up. Or, maybe someone working for the FAA trying to spook everybody into demanding FAA have complete control over all of our hobby aircraft operations.
Unfortunately, this incident will precipitate another step in the beginning of the end of our freedom to operate our aircraft in a relatively carefree manner.
Last year the FAA was barely kept on a leash in their attempt to control the hobby. And now, this unfortunate incident being investigated by the FAA, will have all those who've been pushing for hobbyist restrictions saying, "We told you so!". Regardless of whom was operating that particular drone in DC.
With the proliferation of commercial, government and law enforcement drones there is little to prevent our hobby aircraft from being included in the restrictive net that will be thrown over the others. Most assuredly if it comes to light that some ill advised hobbyist was responsible for this incident.
So, enjoy the freedom to fly relatively restriction free while you can. That time is coming to an end; sooner rather than later.
