Didn't the P-51 use the Merlin engine, or is that made by Rolls Royce? I guess I could Google it, but I'm being lazy. The RR Merlin engine was an upgrade from the P51's original powered Allison engine. It transformed the plane. It be came the fastest plane of the era as well as an outstanding high altitude fighter. Me109's and FW 190's would fall out of the sky trying to keep up with the P51 at altitude. RR could not supply enough motors for all of their planes (hawker, spit, etc.) and most of the P51's had RR licensed engines built by Packard and Cadillac. There are many cases where pilots got in big trouble with torque rolls due to the 4 blade prop and the torque of the engine.

I got the Monster 10 yesterday and hooked it up to the TowerPro 40A ESC. It ran very smoothly with only a little nano second tick at 50% throttle on mid timing. I lowered it to low timing and it ran the same I then went back to the C3542 and tested it again. It ran exactly like the Monster 10. WTH, this thing was jittering like crazy the other day. I was talking to Ray and he asked if the battery I was using the other day (I was using a differrent one for the second test) had a bad cell. I didn't think so, but upon testing I found that it did. It just happened to go down during testing. Mystery solved...Maybe. ;D Edit: Bench tested the C3542 and found a broken wire coming from the ESC. Repaired the wire and ran the motor. All seemed OK. Put the prop on it and it spooled up fine until I hit 3/4 throtlle and then came a massive vibration. I changed the collet type and prop and the same thing happened. I must have bent the shaft in the first and only flight'crash when the motor quit. It seems I'm on a losing streak with this project so far. I've got the new Monster 10 that needs the shaft pushed through. Maybe I'll have better luck with that.

I haven't resolved the motor issue yet, but I decided to use the new 2200 mAh 25C battery (previously using a 1500 20C or 1550 25C) with the 40A ESC (previously using a 30A) with the PKZ 480 motor just to see if there was a noticable performance increase. Frankly I was expecting to se little or no difference in speed due to the increased weight of the 2200 battery and 40A ESC. I was a bit surprised at how good that mod worked. Speed was up a few mph. Of course the flight times increased as well. Even though heavier; the plane still had a good glide angle and sink rate. The CG was about 1/4" behind stock, which is a little nose heavy. I'm still planning on using the Monster 10 & or Turnigy C3542 motor for the Test Mule. I'm not so sure about what will end up in the "Shiny" one. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. ;D I've read some very good reports on the PKZ 480 motor with 40A ESC on a 4 cell and the 10X7 MAS prop. It will be interesting to test that out as well...And then maybe add the monster 10.

19k, I had the E-Flite Power 25 motor with 4S 2200mah Zippies in my T-28. I ran a 12x6 prop and the thing was a BEAST!! Blew the stock PZ-480 away!
Specs say you can squeak (at the smallest) an 11x7 prop on there. I'm not sure what kind of clearance you have with your landing gear. With the T-28, I actually ended up putting a larger nose wheel on - just to get that clearance.

That's a motor that can deliver 600 Watts. I'm not looking for that much more power though. Something in the 450 Watt range. I've seen some vids of some 90-130 mph PKZ P51's and they just don't look "right" to me. Too fast. Out of character for the airframe, IMHO. Like having a 60 mph Wright Flyer. Or a jet that does 25 mph. But that's just me. ;D

Good point. Its all about personal preference.
Probably any upgrade over stock will make you happy. I'm sure it will turn out to be a neat Warbird no matter what motor you throw in it.

I'll call this post "Gunfighter's last shoot out". ;D I was testing the MAS prop on the Test Mule. All was going well. I was flying off my least favorite soccer field for the first time this season. Mom's and Dad's with kids on my favorite fields. Oh well. I had made a couple of approaches. The wind was gusting from 10-20 so a landing into the wind was the best. Unfortunately, that put my approach between trees, then over power lines, followed by skirting a nice football goal post over a bench to an area about 40 ft., or so, square with grass short enough to land on without a guaranteed nose over. I hit the back of the bench. I thought I was well past it, but since the plane was coming at me almost straight on (the view need to thread the obstacles) I misjudged it by a tiny bit. Barely clipped the left landing gear and wing but still had plenty of speed to bust it up when it hit the ground. This reminded me of my last crash where I misjudged the approach out on the ice road and hit the top of a light post out by the launching ramp last winter. Besides the obvious damage, the gears in the rudder servo stripped. So, the Gunfighter has had it's last shoot out. A little prematurely. Soon to be reincarnated as...

Bummer. We've all been the victims of misjudging our landings.

Your picture is gone, 19k! Did you move the picture on Photobucket? If you do, then you need to renew the link here.
The damage didn't look too bad, really, from memory. Are you going to GG it back together, or buy a new fuselage?

I was moving some stuff on photobucket. I accidentally removed the photo of the Gunfighter from photobucket and the post above. No longer on the camera card either. Bye, bye. I've GG'd the fuse back together. It's real solid. I'm filling and sanding to get it smooth. Not my favorite part of building just because it takes so long do it right. The reincarnation will be similar to the ultra P51: The Lightning Bolt design from the 118th's 23rd Fighter Group featured in the movie Empire of the Sun. One of our favorite movies, and definitely, our favorite one with a P51 in it. The inspiration for the "Shiny" one. I'll be taking some coloration liberties, as they did at Pkz, on the ultra version. There seems to be many variations out there so I'll retain the Lightning Bolt on the fuse with our own color scheme. The "Shiny" one will wait until after Oshkosh since there will be so many P51's there, I'm sure if I build it now, it would certainly need to be changed when we got back. ;D

I'm finally ready to finish paint the P51. I was going overboard on the prep. It's a foam plane for chrisake. I've filled and sanded and primed 4 times. With the silver paint all the flaws will show up anyway, so it was time to quit. The Monster 10 motor, thanks to Ray, is ready to go. I need another inexpensive 40 A ESC and everybody seemed to be out of those the last time I checked, so I may be doing some swapping with another plane. Pictures to follow.

Very cool. That was a great movie by the way. I had forgotten about it until your post. We bought the original "Empire of the Sun" movie on video tape and then we re-did our movie collection, somewhere around 300 on DVD, and now we're looking at doing it on BlueRay. I don't know about the BlueRay for most movies. I play our DVD's on the BlueRay player and they look great to me. Those pictures above were screen shots. Or, maybe I just don't want to spend 6K for 300 more copies. That much money would buy me a Turbine something or other. ;D

The Gunfighter "Reincarnation" is almost complete...With quiet a few "liberties" taken in modifing the group markings of the 118th Recon's 23rd fighter group that was stationed in China during WWII. Airframe repair: Lot's of Gorilla Glue and a few toothpicks for alignment. I added a new horizontal stab and elevator reinforced with a piece of wire inserted along the inside edge of the elevator, on both sides, and across the narrow portion. Paint: Krylon Metallic Finish over light spackel filler and Krylon primer. Striping: Scotch Brand Blue tape with Scotch Brand Red tape piping and lightning bolt. I got a little too much backlighting to accurately show the red lightning bolt on the blue background. The metallic paint came out very "Shiny". The auto setting on the camera flattened it out a bit. This one's a bit better in showing the lightning bolt. When I order the graphics for the "Super Corsair" from Callie, I'm going to have a piece of chin art done . It's going to be a cloud with my wife's nickname in it: Rainey. Lighning bolts, clouds and rain. When will the metaphors end? ;D I put the PKZ 480 motor, 30A ESC, & 1550 25C back in it for now. After flying it with the larger and heavier components including; the C3542, 40A ESC and larger 2200 battery I came to the conclusion that, while it is quiet a bit faster, I liked the weight, balance and handling with the other components better. So, that's it for now until we get back from Oshkosh. I look forward to starting another thread if I decide to add another "Shiny" P51 to the fleet. ;D
