It's a little different than some forums! At the top you should see something like, "Hey Moparmyway, you have nn messages, nn are new." You should be able to click on the "nn messages", to take you to the message area. Then once in the message area, you should see a tab for 'new message'. I'll send you one...then you can hit reply. Kent ...or you can click on the username of the person you want to send a message to and choose "Send Personal Message" (next to member's bio)

akent, I did not read this entire thread, but did you discuss airflow? Heli motors with centrifugal fans on the bottom suck air from the top (rear in your case) and blow out the bottom. That is fighting against the air that is being shoved into the FJ. Sadly, I've only gotten my FJ up to 119mph. I have not modded to push it past that. No plans for now to get it faster.

At almost 120mph, the stock FJ airframe has more than reached it limits. I'd be sure you have extreme tape or gorilla tape on the hinges, as those will be the first to tear away.
Interesting point on the airflow. I would imaginge that would create some noticeable drag. However, Kent's FJ seemed to overcome that issue. Maybe some more research is needed here.

From my experience: The stock original airframe is good for 100mph. Maybe 110mph. That's it! My original Funjet goes 110mph with extra carbon across the frame and on the elevon edge. It is fine at this speed, but when I pushed it to 140-150 it was out of control. The frame flexes way too much.
The Ultra is good for as much power and speed as you can throw at it, well, at least 150mph and 2.3kw like I run in mine! My Ultra airframe is STOCK! I am running the aluminum motor mount, but that's it!
My Ultra is consistently 150mph with 2kw+. I'm running 2.3kw nominally with the 6.5x5 APC pylon racer prop. It screams!
This Funjet is rock stable. It is too much to hand launch, as it torque rolls badly. I now only use a bungee launcher and it is awesome. No more launching issues.
Yes, this is also not as fast as some Funjets out there, but it's just fine with me, and mine gets a LOT of comments every time I fly it! Folks love the speed!
I also have a 110mph normal Funjet with minor mods that flies great. This one hand launches fine. The Ultra is only 40mph faster, but it sure looks and feels like it's 100mph faster!!!
It's amazing how much faster 150 is to 110!
I love my Ultra! Kent

Dditch, the motor in my Ultra doesn't pull air in from the back. It pushes air out. I know the 'fan' seems backwards, but it's not. I did remove the plate on there and if you spin the motor up without a prop, it pushes air OUT the back. Seems odd. Kent

Well, my Ultra no longer exists!
Today, I flew it once and all was good. It seemed to be flying faster than ever. I did use a new Nano-Tech 6s today. Maybe that's why...
Well, on the second flight I flew around and then thought I would come down from a high dive at WOT into a low pass over the runway.
Once I leveled out and right in front of me, the thing blew up! It hit the ground at WOT, just on the other side of the asphalt. It left a crater in the hard dirt.
Folks said the front of the fuse broke off just before it hit. I was maybe 10 feet over the runway. That is kind of what I saw too, but it was hard to tell for me. I just remember flying it and then there were parts flying.
The battery is really bad. It landed and skidded several hundred feet down the runway. The motor did too, but it might not be destroyed. I don't know yet.
The metal geared servos are both toast. The ESC appears Ok, as does the receiver. This time, I put the receiver towards the back in the fuse, so it had some stuff in front of it this time!
It was a very impressive crash! Folks were talking about it all afternoon! I'll try to post some pics of the remains tomorrow.
Oh, and I also crashed my Formula 1 racer Pogo today, too. Dumb thumbs on the rudder at takeoff. I was racing another fellow for fun. I don't know if it is fixable either, yet.
Oh well. I did fly the Stryker Q several times and it flew great! It didn't explode today! It is slower than it used to be, though...
Thinning out the fleet allows room for new planes, right? I wish my wife understood that.... Kent

Sorry to hear of your crashes. Both of those planes were real beauties.
I crashed 3 in one day last season. That was my worst day. They were all nice planes I had a lot of work in. A Super Corsair, Spitfire and P-51.
But, like you say, the silver lining is in the new space in the hangar. My wife accepts this now. Doesn't even flinch when I tell her one's down and another is on it wasy
I've been on a lucky streak lately so my hangar is bursting at the seams. I'm sure fate will intervene soon, it's just a matter of time, and create some new openings.

Haha! Thin fleet = new planes! I love it!
This just means you'll rebuild with a better fuse and more power....he he he

Sorry, I disassembled the remains a few days ago and threw most it away. I didn't throw away the battery (will be bringing it to Radio Shack along with some others) and the nose. The nose broke off and hit the ground by itself. It's actually not that bad. The front has a large hook in it and the foam is all split. The rest of the airframe was in little pieces. It also turns out the receiver is bad. It's a JR 9 channel. The remote is toast too. What's strange is the power supply chip in there is bad. I wonder how that happened? The chip is shorted, so the output of the power supply chip is seeing the full BEC voltage. That fried the rest of the chips in the receiver, as they are all 3 volt parts. Oh well. The ESC looks Ok. That's the only thing electrical that survived. Here's the nose and battery. I have no idea what happened to the purple Nano-Tech heat shrink from the battery. And yes, that is Lithium metal exposed. It did smoke for a while. Attachments:

Well, if you know anyone who's bipolar you could always give them the battery to gnaw on!

A crash that bad it's lucky anything survived. It's a shame that you lost a good Rx and battery though. I've only lost a few batteries and one Rx in crashes, but my planes aren't hitting the ground at 150+

Hey Kent, how were the flight characteristics of the Ultra compared to the standard FJ? You had a big battery in there if I recall. I'm poor as dirt with the new baby on the way, but I'm still looking for something to build!

There really is no comparison between the original Funjet and the Ultra.
The Ultra is made of that super strong foam. With this last one, I cut off the elevons and hinged them with the Robart pin hinges. There were zero problems with the elevons, and in fact they didn't even let loose in the crash. I really think the foam itself is too stiff for use on the hinges. They break after a while.
Other than that, the airframe was all stock other than the aluminum motor mount. This mount only works with the 35mm motors though. === After talking with a few folks again on Sunday, they seemed to think that maybe the canopy came off, allowing that fast air into the fuse which caused it to explode like that. Humm....Maybe so...
I do plan on another one! With that one, I'll figure something out to really keep the canopy on tight. At least a few extra magnets. That plastic canopy clip is kind of funky...
This Ultra was running a Nano-Tech 2200ma 6S. Kent

Whoah! 6S! That must have been heavy!
Yeah I lost an FJ due to the canopy flying off as well. Instant explosion of foam everywhere! We need a good solution to that. Maybe drywall anchors and screws like I use on my Darkside Stryker? I bring a Makita with ms to save time!

I decided to build another Ultra! I have all the parts now.
I plan on installing a miniature gorilla in there to hold the canopy on.
I really miss that little rocket! Kent
