How about a fast-n-dirty review of this heli? I've destroyed a few RTF 6-chans and would still like to get back into collective eventually. Opinions on this one?

This is a lot of heli for the money. It's a 400 size, not quite as big or stable as a 450 size. Easily upgrades to brushless. CNC parts available for upgrade. Flies nicely in a good breeze. 3D capable, but sport flying is more up it's alley. The radio system is adequate, not stelllar.

I like the sport angle, I never got into 3D except by pure dumb-thumb. I checked it out at XHeli, the new ones are already brushless, so, that's a plus. It's something to add to my already endless wish list.

shaky, It's biggest drawback is the radio. Mines on Fut T7 now, When I can get the it to fly it is a cat's meow! {sorry, couldn't resist} Mine was basket case, has been rebuilt / modded by total novice [me] . Rebuild is cheap, parts are also Walkera 36, tons of info and people who have/ have had one. at the moment mine's just got new batteries and the tracking's off again? Verdict? If you get one, you will be rebuilding and learning the inside of R/c helos. When it flies you will have a blast. There are several fixer upper's for sale right now, If you've decided to stay in hobby, that's a route I would consider. You will work on any helo you have, might as well learn from the get go. And build from the ground up your way. Just an opinion

That's about what I want, a fixer-upper. As for a radio, I've a DX7 that's been sitting idle since the MX400 went blooey. (Lesson learned, JR servos ain't that good, shoulda listened to the Blade kids on that one.)
Looks like I'm gonna go shopping! And my thanks, guys!

Shaky, just posted two vids of a {profesional dumb thumb, me} wobblin my g2 around in the vids section. Hoping that I'll get sugestions on what I need to do next to it. The vids are almost as bad as the flyin, but that is a version 1 G2. Bought it off Craig's list, and the folk's here n elsewhere got me this far. 'Kat

I have the G2 also, if I was in your situation I would skip the g2 and buy a trex 450 clone. The g2, dont get me wrong is a good heli for learning, but like 19k says it has its limitations. The only place in the US that carries parts for the g2/walkera 36 is xheli, so if xheli goes out of stock on a part that you need you will be waiting a while to get the part. You already have a great radio, so if you bought the g2 you would be paying money for another radio that you wont even use. I would suggest going with a trex 450 clone, you could build one with better electronics than what comes with the g2 for about the same price, and you wont be out growing the heli anytime soon. Ive had my g2 for a little over a year now it has taught me the basics of collective pitch and how to set one up. But I recently crashed it and now I dont think its worth rebuilding. And am looking at building a trex 450 clone. Ive heard good things about this kit- www.xheli.com/18h15-cf450-v3-kit.html Its a clone of a trex 450 pro and you would be able to get parts from alot of different places. I did a rough estamite of how much it would cost to get it flying and came up with about $170.

I have a bunch of G2 parts here that I'm attempting to put together as a complete heli. Can anyone tell me which kit comes with the belt gear for the tail shaft. I don't see it available in any of the G2 or Walkera 36 sites.
...and how many teeth does the main gear have? I'm trying to choose a pinion.

50H08-26 ExceedRC
HM-036-Z-26 Walkera #36
The pix show a white gear, what I got when ordered was black plastic Been flying a 11 tooth pinion, put a 13 on and hopped it tonight. I think the 13t is going to be the ticket. This on alpha 400. It flew ok, but sorta 'loggy' with 11t, can't find a 12t for alpha 400

P.S. Mine is 132 tooth main gear but was V1, don't know if they changed

Thanks, kat. Does that kit come with the gear that fits the tail shaft? Can't really tell from the pic.
Looks like this main gear is 132 teeth as well. Counted 1/4 the way around and then multiplied. I'm using a 3800kv motor, so I may stick with an 11T pinion.
This thing is a total PITA to work on. Getting the belt gear, the belt and the tail assy together while hanging onto two halves of the frame will take every last bit of my patience.

The kit I got was black plastic, not the white shown in ad. Came with gear ,shaft, spacer, and two belt 'cogs'. One for front shaft, one for tail shaft. Came via xheli, but don't remember why white / black thingy. Or if even important. Several other Walkera's use same drive 36B 60 & 60B + others. The orginal manual shows shims high and low on front drive shaft, no referance though. I burn't 2 front drives, then I made shims. No more burnt drives. I blocked and taped one side of frame to bench, easy now, just lay everything on and make sure in correct place.

Solitaire, I'm not so sure about the 60 parts fitting now. was checking and some of my referances aren't working anymore. The 13t pinion tryout didn't go so good Main gear spun on the shaft in flight, I 'failed to negiotate a turn' and lawn darted. So, it's back to the bench for rebuild 2, the first being when I bought it 'Kat

When you talk shims, do you mean something like a flat washer? I've sortof got this together but only one "shim". Not sure another would fit.
Now waiting for some head parts and then figure out how all that goes together. The exploded parts views that I've found aren't too clear on proper assembly.
Are you running 275mm or 288mm blades?

If I remember correctly, been a while since I've done this, there are two shims/washers that go on the main bearings. I think both go on the bottom side of each of the bearings. It's a good idea to lay one side of the frame on a flat surface, put all the pieces in one side and then put the two halves together. I use a couple of books to suspend each end of one side of the frame. This way the main gears, bearings, shaft and collars will stay in that side of the frame without the need of a third hand when it all goes together. Then, the only tricky part is holding the primary tail drive gear, secondary gear and belt in place while assembling the two halves. I always leave the belt hanging out of the tube loosely to fit over the secondary drive gear, without the tail assembly attached, with a string and weight attached to the tail end of the belt, hanging out of the tail end of the tube and then I have enough slack in the belt, to fiddle the primary and secondary gear with belt in the tube in place, while I get the screws from the other side of the frame to hold the whole mess together. This whole magic act could have been avoided if they had just made the frame slightly different and provided better diagrams. But I don't need tell you guys that...I'm preaching to the choir.

Solitaire, 19K uses the same set up I do, except I leave the boom off until frame together and use wire to pull belt through. No fuss, everything lays in frame half with no stress. Put a extra main shaft through main bearings and you can check mesh on belt drive 'on the half shell' lol. Sorry I wasn't clear. Yes, shim is flat washer used to take slack out of parts stacked on a shaft. The two shims I mentioned are on the belt drive, or secondary shaft. I'm also only running one, one the top, to increase belt drive cog's pressure down on the drive pin. Without it, cog strips by pin and melts, losing the tail drive in flight. If needed, I have a 'coupla parts diagram's I can send, might be the same as what you have though. Also, have several pix's on photobucket of head {before crash!!} Look under 'TheFastKat'. I split the frame when I lawndarted yesterday, I'm going down this same road real soon. Got to decide whether to 'rekit' {sorta high priced} or rebuild 'my' G2 {probably higher priced} Wifey asked "If you rekit, will it be the 'same' helo?" I'm WAS flying stock original G2 blades {290} got a set of walkera 36 originals {290} Is Wifey's helo, she thinks it's "cute", blades have to color coordinate Seen several G2's with thrust bearing in wrong. If any worries, let me know. 19K, It is a unique helo, ain't it?? 'Kat
